Sheriff Lott's New Toy
The Richland County, South Carolina Sheriff's Department (that's them above) just obtained an armored personnel carrier, complete with a belt-fed, .50-cal turreted machine gun. Sheriff Leon Lott has charmingly named the vehicle "The Peacemaker," and insists that using a caliber of ammunition that even the U.S. military is reluctant to use against human targets (it's generally reserved for use against armored vehicles) will "save lives."

Can we call this overkill, yet? Is there any weapon people like Sheriff Lott would consider inappropriate for use against American citizens?

Like most of these military toys obtained by local police departments, the Peacemaker will inevitably be used on drug and gambling raids—that is, to enforce laws against consensual activities. Or, as we're now seeing in Minnesota, perhaps on raids against leftist political activists.

Can't be too careful, you know.

S.C. Sheriff's Department Armored Vehicle with Belt-Fed Machine Gun
The Richland County (S.C.) Sheriff's Department has acquired an armored personnel carrier complete with a turret-mounted .50-caliber belt-fed machine gun for its Special Response Team.

Sheriff Leon Lott told the Columbia State newspaper that he hoped the vehicle, named "The Peacemaker," would let the bad guys know that his officers are serious.

"We don't look at this as a killing machine," Lott told the paper. "It's going to keep the peace. We hope the fact that we have this is going to save lives. When something like this rolls up, it's time to give up."

The Peacemaker has a top speed of 30 mph.

Don't mind the title of this thread. It was just to poke fun at anti-gun Liberals :o

Anyway - I'm deeply appalled about the ideal of militarizing civilian police. I mean for god's sake... we already have ATF, DEA, and National Guards. Must our local police be like this? :mad2:

AMERICA! ARM YOURSELF! EXERCISE YOUR AMENDMENT 2!! but......... don't be stupid to fight against this cop with APC & .50 caliber turrent :(

In this economy--I'm suprised that they would allow him to spend that kind of money...

not really a tank but it's an APC - Armored-Personnel Carrier.

Well, an APC then. If you ask me, I think they are doing more damages by expanding the drug war. It never seem to get any better, only worse.

I wonder how many times they have used it?
I have no idea, but I don't believe they have any use for it unless there is a big riot going on at the University of South Carolina campus in Columbia (Richland County). They could have saved taxpayers some money and call in the State Armory when they need it.

that is not going to bode well for them if they used .50 calibers on riot.... I hope it's not Kent State massacre again....

Oh, that'll make the criminal scumbags surrender easily, otherwise, they'll be shred up.

I live near Baltimore where lots of drug dealing takes place..I cant imagine having to see that rumble in my neighborhood shooting the hell out of everyone!

Ahh, good one. M113's armour is too weak for the sticky bombs, I suppose.

oh no no - you just plant sticky bombs in its wheel. that's all. If a stick bomb can wreck M113... then any insurgents with grenades can wreck it. that would be an EPIC FAIL!
