getting CI will destroy your cochlea, if that's what you're asking. Cochlea contains fluid inside.... the implant surgery will poke a hole in it and drain the fluid... to insert the wire thru it.

not in all cases. today's ci's are designed to preserve residual hearing. that happens for some, but not all ci recipients. in my case, I lost all of my residual hearing rendering me completely deaf without my implants.

well ci surgery isn't brain surgery. (a ci has nothing to do with the brain except for the fact that one hears with a ci using their brain instead of their ears) a hole is drilled through the mastoid bone and electrodes are placed into the cochlea. mappings can be complex to get right and it takes many mappings over a period of time to receive the best map possible.

$300?! :shock: to avoid this kind of problem, i have a cell phone that uses a pay as you go plan. i get 150 minutes for $25 per month. once those minutes are used up, i have to wait until the following month to make calls. i can also put a lock on my cell phone to avoid other people from using it.

well I was referring to side effects of CI has on brain - migraine, severe depression, etc... like what travis experienced.

There was a website about a stem cell regeneration. It was very interesting information. The research was somewhat successful - not quite exactly successful because it needs a shield against a toxic chemical and unfriendly sound environment from entering into the stem area (inside the cochlear). The regeneration itself is working, but the hair cells or hair nerves (which is called cilia) keeps growing - that's where it needs to be stopped growing in the right amount of length. The lab put something on it to stop growing, and the stem-celi was killed immediately. The teams still do not know why the stem was dead right away. Then later, Bush banned all this type of research. He ruined everything. He is so an uneducated man. He knows that he was so dumb and unpopular man ever now. The research lost 10 millions or maybe 10 billion dollars because of him.

The CI implant killed all hair cells (cilia) in the cochlear with the wires in it because the wires are powerful to make the sound work. It is the only way. It is really hard for a patient to make a big decision because we have not found a right stem cell for so many years. Maybe, someday, there will be a stem cell available if they wish to remove the CI and implant the stem cells instead. I think that some of them should go ahead with the CI implants.

actually, loss of residual hearing has to do with the fact that electrodes are inserted into the cochlea -- not the power of the electrodes themselves. once fluid in the cochlea leaks, some residual hearing (if not all) is lost.

Oh I see what you mean. Wow, the fluid is inside the cochlear. I get the picture of what you said. Another in my mind, just like inserting a wire in it which causes a virtually massive wave that destroys the cilia - but not a good example, but an ideal.
