2theadvocate.com | News | La. deaf school teacher pleads guilty to felony — Baton Rouge, LA
A suspended Louisiana School for the Deaf teacher admitted in state court Friday that she e-mailed sexually explicit images and messages to a 16-year-old female student .
Amanda Elizabeth Key, 30, pleaded guilty through a sign language interpreter to a felony charge of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
State District Judge Chip Moore gave Key a suspended two-year prison term and put her on active supervised probation for five years.
She must register as a sex offender.
Key was one of five people — three of them current or former teachers at the School for the Deaf — arrested between November and April on sex-related charges involving students at the school.
Christopher Watson, a former School for the Deaf teacher, pleaded guilty last month to the same charge Key pleaded to Friday. He admitted exchanging sexually explicit e-mails and photographs with the same girl.
State District Judge Tony Marabella is scheduled to sentence Watson later this month.
Charges against the other three have not been resolved.
Moore ordered Key to perform 100 hours of community service and to have no contact with the girl.
“You see this person in public, you better be running,’’ he said. “I don’t want y’all around one another.’’
Key was arrested in November on a charge of indecent behavior with a juvenile after the girl’s mother discovered that Key had e-mailed her daughter 21 images depicting various sexual positions, an affidavit says.
Key also sent nude photos of herself and told the girl she wanted to perform oral sex on her, the affidavit says.
Prosecutor Sue Bernie told Moore that no such sexual contact occurred.
Indecent behavior with a juvenile carries stiffer penalties than contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
“We felt that the plea agreement was in the best interest in view of the evidence,’’ Key’s attorney, Jim Holt, said outside the courtroom. “She was ready to get on with her life.’’
Key began working at the school on Brightside Lane in 2003 as a physical education instructor and assistant volleyball coach. She was promoted to head volleyball coach in 2006.
Key is not teaching, Holt told Moore. She has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings, he said.
Key told the judge through an interpreter that she has been waiting tables at a bar for the past 10 months and also has been bartending since July.
