Okay - down the road from us is a farm where we don't know the people and I never see a vehicle to know if it's safe to knock. They have soem beautiful horses in the pasture. I have never seen a horse like 2 of them. They are light tan ad they had their manes cut short. the forelock and tails were not cut or trimmed. But with the manes, the 2 outer edges are the same light tan, but down the middle it was pitch black. Their tails are the same, light tan on the outer edges with black in the middle. Do you know what breed of horse this could be and why would they cut the mane off? They were absolutely beautiful!! Daughter thinks they cut the mane for horse shows, but I'm not sure.:hmm:

Yep its Fjords...

Wow, the Fijords sound like an old, old breed. Amazing they are able to keep the breed intact. Must be very few of them....

Thank you so so much. My daughter isjust fascinated that there would be 2 of them here in Missouri. They are beautiful!!

If this is really that breed, wouldn't you think they'd cost an arm and a leg? I'd be curious if you find out the price. Or the cost of a foal, the cost of stud fees.....

It could be race horses too. There is a farm up the street from me too, they are Thoroughbreds. Your daughter is right though, docked tails are for show purposes, as a pet horse doesn't usually require their tail to be that way. The horses at the ranch might have been in shows before, maybe they are just retired horses.

I did finally get to talk with the owner - they are the Norwegian Fjords. They were purchased a few years ago and sent over. They are current show horses. The tails are not docked, just the mane being trimmed off. The forelock is usualy braided for the show as is the tail. They are a brother & sister and will not be bred at all. That was part of the agreement when purchasing due to wanting to keep the line free from cross-breeding. The family has a deaf member and one of the horses has learned signed commands and comes when the girl claps.

Wow. That is amazing about one of the horses learning signed commands! Very smart horse :)
