Here's the link to about how much you would save on average if you didn't own a car or leave the car at home. I figured I would save roughly $6,200 a year not including mantience of the car, which sounds about right. That sounds really good to ride a bus or train to work. :) That is a huge chunk of money involved.

I wish we could do that, but in our town the bus does not run late enough at night to make it possible.

but.... a large drawback is.... you'll be wasting lot of time waiting and getting to your destination. If you want to skimp on cost.... you should get a motorcycle/scooter :cool2: That's why I think #1 issue right now should be a complete revamp of mass transit so I can live in Pennsylvania and commute to NYC via train within 30 min or less. This will help boost the economy for all as well! Poor people will be able to commute to metro area for jobs while they live in cheaper area which is usually far.

Yep, that's right....not a good solution for areas with bad transit system. The buses around here come every 5-15 minutes depending on the area, we got one of the bus system in the US but too bad it doesn't run 24/7, oh well. We're expecting light rail and it will run for 20 hours 7 days a week starting on July 2009 opening date.

and for those areas with bad transit system because of light population or rural area.... they should use small commuter van/shuttle instead of big expensive bus. every bit helps!

Some metro areas have poor transit system, so it varies state to state/city to city also. Here in Seattle area, there are smaller buses and transit vans that serve smaller suburbs. :)

At this stage, I use public transport to travel to/from work. It cost me $26.50 per week to travel, which is cheap.

But, after September, I will have to pay over $50 per week to travel to/from work using public transport. With the current cost of petrol, I can probably drive my car to/from work, and providing I can park my car free, the savings between driving and using public transport is not substantial.

I am hoping to trial riding to work once the weather improves.
