Hello all...
I've got some pretty big questions...I'm hoping someone has some knowledge in this area...
Alright, so I'm 22 (I'll be 23 in Nov) and have been financially independent for almost 4 years. Everything is in my name (car, insurance, college loans, etc.). The only exception is that my "permanent address" up until this point is still my parents and I'm still under their health insurance. Other than that, there is no financial support. I've been working up until this past summer full time and still living with my parents, but I decided to go to school full time (finally!) and now I'm living on campus.
Here's the catch. I'm still listed as being a "dependent" under my parents by the government because they're my permanent address, and I'm not 23 yet. PLUS, my parents claimed me as a dependent last year on their tax return (even though I wanted to file independently and I could have with how I was working-but they did theirs before I did mine...)
So this is causing a bit of an issue.
According to the govt, I should be getting financial assistance from my parents to help with college and other expenses (like hearing aids!). Financially, my parents CAN'T help me (which is why I'm on my own) and technically can't sign for loans, etc. However according to govt standards, they should be able to...etc,.
Anyway...I need to find a way to be able to officially be declared "independent". I am living on campus at school-am I allowed to use my mailing address here at the university as my permanent address? Can I go and change my license to my mailing address here at school since this is where i'm living 90% of the year (I even take summer classes, so I'm here constantly!). Will I lose the eligibility to be under my parents health insurance because I am not residing in their home?
This is all very important...because I found out I won't be eligible for financial assistance from the state because technically my perm address is still showing that I reside with my parents...even though technically i don't. I'm going to be 23...which is when I think I can declare myself as indep on the FAFSA...but that won't go into effect until next fall (2009). I've lost out on scholarships...other financial aid...a ton of stuff because of this.
I have to take out the student loans to pay for school...and right now the biggest issue is the fact that I can't afford to pay for hearing aids at the moment...but my parents can't help me out in that area either! I plan on getting a new job in the fall...but I need help now...
Help would be very much appreciated...
