WASHINGTON - The Senate rejected a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage by a wide margin Wednesday, delivering a stinging defeat to
President Bush and other Republicans who had hoped the issue would rally GOP voters for the November elections.

The senators' vote was 49-48 to limit debate and bring the amendment to a yes-or-no decision. That was 11 short of the 60 needed, killing the measure in the Senate for this year.

President Bush suggested the ban was proper and its time would still come. He said, "Our nation's founders set a high bar for amending our Constitution and history has shown us that it can take several tries before an amendment builds the two-thirds support it needs in both houses of Congress."

Democrats suggested it was all about conservative politics.

"Why is it when Republicans are all for reducing the federal government's impact on people's lives until it comes to these stinging litmus test issues, whether gay marriage or end of life they suddenly want the federal government to intervene?" asked Sen. Dianne Feinstein (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif. "It makes no sense other than throwing red meat to a certain constituency."

The 49 votes to keep the amendment alive were one more than the measure received the last time the Senate voted, in 2004. Proponents had predicted the amendment would get at least a 51-vote majority in the 100-member Senate with the gain four Republican seats since then.

It takes two-thirds majorities in both houses of Congress to send a proposed amendment to the states for ratification. The House will take up the issue next month.

Despite the defeat, amendment backers insisted progress had been made because the debate over three days raised the issue's profile and will force candidates to answer for their votes on the campaign trail.

Senate rejects amendment on gay marriage

REMEMBER CANADIAN ELECTIONS WHY LIBERALS LOST?

It was social issues on gay marrages cost the liberal party the election in canada. Now it might cost the democrats an opportunity to gain seats in the house and in senate.Instead the GOP might gain more seats.

Are you sure?
read this and find out what was the cause of this election?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_federal_election,_2006
This general election elected members for the House of Commons, indirectly determining the prime minister and cabinet, as the government will be formed by the political party or coalition of parties that the governor general determines is best able to command the confidence of the House (usually the one with the most elected members). This unusual winter election was caused by a motion of no confidence passed by the House of Commons on November 28, 2005. The following morning, Prime Minister Paul Martin met with Governor General Michaëlle Jean, who agreed to dissolve the minority parliament, issuing a proclamation of the dissolution (Canada Gazette: Proclamation Dissolving Parliament). The Governor General then issued a proclamation issuing Writs of election (Canada Gazette: Proclamation Issuing Election Writs), followed by a final proclamation summoning Parliament to meet (Canada Gazette: Proclamation Summoning Parliament to Meet on February 20, 2006), though this will be superseded by further proclamations as the date for the assembling of Parliament is changed. The campaign was almost eight weeks in length, the longest in two decades, in order to allow for downtime over the Christmas and New Year holidays.
There you go!

and Same Sex Marraige in Canada is legal across the nation since 2005.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_Canada

you have to look at those provinces that made it legal before it became nationwide legal. It was not liberals. it was the people that spoke!

so therefore what happened today in Senate will not hurts Democrats in Nov 2006. It is Victory for us Progressive Democrats! We will take the Congress back from those corrupted Republicans.

You want Bush to write "discrimination" into US Constitution? I don't...

We can hope. I would really love to see Congress moderate. My personal belief is that extremes isn't good. Be it too liberal or too conservative.

Just my two cents.

It won't happen because democrats have break time from action with Political issues and they will going be gain more stronger and more stronger in next November 2006 but I guess that some conservatives would not welcome to vote "yes" for bans on gay marriage, Bush is fucking idiot and everyone at our school hates him, they are planning to protest against him after school is out.

It won't hurt the dems in the fall because people already knew the Dems were against the amendment. They knew it in 2004, they knew it in 2005, they know it in 2006. And in spite of them knowing, the dems are still likely to pick up four or five seats in the Senate and at least a dozen in the House.

It will, however, hurt the GOP. The fact that the amendment failed yet again will be a signal to some elements of the Christian Right that the GOP doesn't support their views as much as it claims to--And with the Christian right disinterested, the GOP will have major trouble at the polls.

Personally I think that those who vote against same-sex marriage are hypocrites. They say that same-sex marriage laws are THREATENING their own marriages. If they thought marriage was so sacred, they wouldn't be getting divorced left and right, now would they?

Oh, but we all know good Christians never get divorced! "Til death do us part" is as true today as it was on the wedding day. Homosexual marriage must not be tolerated because it's causing the breakdown of moral order and the elimination of 5765 years of history. I'm sure those homosexual people have something to do with it. Obviously their desire to get married is making more Christians not want to stay married to their spouse. Yup. I'm sure it's their fault. Obviously it can't be our fault, we accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Obviously... It can't... be our fault... Right?

...Right?

I'm glad the Federal Marriage Amendment was rejected! *does happy dance*

The GOP (for the most part) has disappointed me for a long time.

Hi Reba, Both the Deomcracts and the Republicans of today have sold out on the American people. The Democracts are the worst offenders. The Republicans need to be more stronger conservatives.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Fuck that, Republicans are worst offenders and Democrats are liberal enough.

I don't think that republicans would be more conservative, just feel like moderate because this amendment can be harm our personal rights, it make USA looks in big crap with national religions and many people that who immigrate to USA then they will be uncomfortable with USA's majority religions so that's not good. Thanks to senators for make failed.

You HAVE NO wise about USA and you think that USA will be save by conservative then hell no. I would glad if other countries would launch the nuclear weapon into USA because of majority religion issues, I would leaving USA in early 2010's for good before USA is getting into nuck. Good luck with all of your crap on conservative stuff with strong christian. biased.
