Look at what Jillio said:

So basically, it would have to be "America is one of the least tolerant countries BY OUR STANDARDS". Just like how another culture may think we are TOO tolerant by THEIR standards.

How do we measure tolerance anyway?

It ranges from "talking smack" to murder. From my experience, there's a lot of "talking smack" here in America, but by our standards, I would think that in other cultures, they are the less tolerant and can have harsher punishments for it.

So do we go by the number of offenses (being intolerant) or by the degree of punishment for that offense?

WAYYYYY too subjective to measure.
BINGO! Thank GAWD for a few that can absorb context and critically apply it.

Ethnocentric and intolerant attitude. Exactly what I am referring to. Thanks for the concrete example.

Totally off topic. Just another attempt to inflame. Sorry, not playing your game.

Not another attempt to inflame. It's factual. You said that and refusing to provide. What a joke.

And this is off topic as well. Perhaps you need to refresh yourself on the topic of the thread. Seems you think every topic is the same...inflame and contradict any post I make.

Not really. Stop running in circles and people will be happy.

I am not the only one that is telling you so.

Does it make sense that people would move from a tolerant country to an intolerant country? Maybe they're masochists who enjoy persecution?

Perhaps it doesn't make sense to your way of thinking. But that is the whole point. Your way of thinking has nothing to do with their decisions. You must look at it from their perspective.

And yes, one can and does move to a less tolerant society. The society usually attempts to portray itself as tolerant and accepting. Only after experiencing the truth of living within the society does the immigrant discover the ethnocentrism and intolerance to which they are subjected.

Has virtually nothing to do with the topic. That is how it is off topic. The topic is tolerance vs intolerance.

If that's true, then once they experience America's ethnocentrism and intolerance which is so much worse than what they had in their home countries, they go back to their home countries because they are more tolerant there.

In fact, America's intolerance is so awful that Americans are flooding out of the USA to other countries for asylum in more tolerant countries.

Except you're forgetting America has the dollars. Anywhere people can make money, they will ignore the parts of society they dislike.

And obviously, jillio is talking about imperialism, not human rights violations. A country with numerous human rights violations does not equate to intolerant society, but rather a society headed by people who are power-hungry.

How many human rights violations does it take for a country to become an "intolerant society"?

When the entire population believe in the same thing to be rigid, rather than a select few in power forcing their beliefs upon others.

I highly doubt people would classify Cambodians as intolerant and upheld Pol Pot's policies, or considered Vietnamese as intolerant because of the government in Hanoi.

The entire population? Name a country whose entire population believes in the same thing to be rigid as you said.

I've asked the question. So, no, I don't have the answer.

There you go. They could never answer the infamous question, "How many angels dance on the head of a pin" either.

Yet, it is a valid question. What does it take for a country to be labeled as an intolerant society? What country isn't intolerant? I'm sure there is no one single country that never had any human rights violations.
