It ranges from "talking smack" to murder. From my experience, there's a lot of "talking smack" here in America, but by our standards, I would think that in other cultures, they are the less tolerant and can have harsher punishments for it.

So do we go by the number of offenses (being intolerant) or by the degree of punishment for that offense?

Perhaps it doesn't make sense to your way of thinking. But that is the whole point. Your way of thinking has nothing to do with their decisions. You must look at it from their perspective.

And yes, one can and does move to a less tolerant society. The society usually attempts to portray itself as tolerant and accepting. Only after experiencing the truth of living within the society does the immigrant discover the ethnocentrism and intolerance to which they are subjected.

If that's true, then once they experience America's ethnocentrism and intolerance which is so much worse than what they had in their home countries, they go back to their home countries because they are more tolerant there.

In fact, America's intolerance is so awful that Americans are flooding out of the USA to other countries for asylum in more tolerant countries.

Except you're forgetting America has the dollars. Anywhere people can make money, they will ignore the parts of society they dislike.

And obviously, jillio is talking about imperialism, not human rights violations. A country with numerous human rights violations does not equate to intolerant society, but rather a society headed by people who are power-hungry.

When the entire population believe in the same thing to be rigid, rather than a select few in power forcing their beliefs upon others.

I highly doubt people would classify Cambodians as intolerant and upheld Pol Pot's policies, or considered Vietnamese as intolerant because of the government in Hanoi.
