I think what Botts meant is that the tough people would happily look at gruesome photos... I had posted them, Deaffy had too and few others have.. shall I post one on for you to compare? |

Well quick note on the photos. I will have some and if people don't mind i might have one of the actual wire inside my head (the hospital took it during surgery).
But on the note of Surgery, I am out and doing pretty good. I think reading on here may have helped a lot as I knew to expect this bandage to hurt. Good news is, I have no balance issues that weren't there before, I have no ringing in my ears, and as far as I know there were no complications in surgery! I got out of recovery at about 6. Also I found out the my ear doctor turned out to be my CI surgeon as well, so at least I knew he was experienced! I will probably keep posting on here until activation day and when I get my full hearing back and then I may long on like once a month to post in a different thread. Probably mostly threads about CI's though. Again thanks for all the good luck wishes. I only wish that i could have had both ears done today. 1 for better hearing and 2 so that i don't have to have surgery again! |

Glad your surgery went smoothly !
Take it easy while you recover, do exactly what the drs say regarding what you can and can't do (especially stuff like bending over, picking things up etc - that's VERY important) I'm sure the month will fly by - you might want to keep a journal (pen & paper) or a blog etc on your journey ... many people do and find that it not only is therapeutic (allows them to vent any frustrations, concerns, questions they may have for various Drs etc) but also helps them see how they're progressing - it's easy to feel like the steps you make are "tiny" , until you flip back a few weeks or months and realize how many things you've achieved (emotionally, physcially, aurally, orally, socially etc). P.S. I hope you got my PM (3 actually, 1 message split into 3 parts due to the length) Please feel free to PM me any time Today's "day one" of one of the greatest adventures you may ever take.

Zebadee2010, that's great you are done with the surgery, was your cochlea ok when the dr inserted the thing inside it? you said you had some accident that hit your head and ears area, right and you dr were afraid that the cochlea may be damaged in shape? I think it may have been not damaged otherwise they would not be able to insert the electrodes and this is way they did the MRI for you, right.
Keep us updated

Glad your surgery went without a hitch. You are on the homestretch now. Feel free post questions when you need. Comming here helped me alot with recovering from surgery and waiting on activation. I cant wait to see how it goes for you. The CI is pretty neat to hear through. Have you noticed a difference with hearing your own voice?

Intresting, My surgery scar is alot different. I just have a small slice behind the ear. they never needed to shave anything. Is that the nucleus 5 in the previous photo? yeah give it time the ringing could go away. When you wear the processor it has the possibilty the processor will drown out your tinnitus and you wont notice it much. Good luck man, You look just like I did with the bandage.

why did you want Med-El, is it better than Cochlear?
I wish you very fast recovery and an amazing activation, please do not forget us here, your friends once you get going with your activation , I guess we will always will need each other here and support each other. I'm soon going to decide what to do as I'm getting less confused as before, so hopefully I make up my mind soon

Example...I have a friend how is bilateral. One side is Med-El and the other is Cochlear. Not your typical situation (and a long story). He said that Med-El is better environmentally sound wise while Cochlear is better speech wise.

I actually know a number of people who are bilaterally implanted and have two different brands of CI - specifically because one is/can be slightly better for speech, the other for music (and other non-speech sounds)

Awesome pics, Zebadee, well you are lucky boy u didn't need to wait long for your hair to grow back whereas I am a girl and had back length long hair, they LITERALLY shaved 1/3rds of it off!! I looked like I had a half mochian! it took so long to grow back so I had my hair cut to shoulder length 8 months after the surgery.
Phone photos (sony) 005.jpg If I remember rightly (it was least 3 years ago when I did the research), Med-el does have longer array which can go deeper into cochlea, Zebadee may have small cochlea hence he may have been advised to choose other device. But I thought Med-El also does short array and is known better device for people who has ossification. Back to research all devices to refresh my grey brain cells... :-) |
