I recently bought a HDTV and the CC work great, the HD cable works great too (I figured out how to turn the CC through the HD cable box) BUT I also bought a upconverting dvd player and it is hooked up with HDMI wire, the CC doesnt show up. On the dvd player's menu, I can turn the CC on or off so I turned it on, still doesn't show up when I play a dvd that I know has CC on it (I tried it on my other analog tv with a progressive scan dvd player) but with this upconverting dvd player, it doesn't show up.

Have any of you had this same problem? Were you able to resolve it? My friend suggested that I use component cables (green, blue, purple) to connect my upconverting dvd player to the HDTV instead of the HDMI cables. Do you think that will work?

Any advice!!

Thanks!

No it will not work because the CC data is not passed-thur the HDMI or Component cables or any digital cables.

CC data will only be passed thur is Composite cable (yellow RCA Plug) which is older analog signal.

Problem is that there is no standard law for digital closed captioning so manfacture does not worry about making sure that the old analog line 21 CC are passed thur instead it get stripped from video when it upcoverted.

Only way is to get FCC to pass a law that old analog CC are prevesered when upcoverting or to ask the manfacture to start making Upconverted DVD players with CC decoder built in so it decodes the CC before it upcovert and sending it across the HDMI or Component cables.

Cable HDTV works because your local cable providers takes analog CC and converts it to digital CC signal then send it to your home HDTV cable box which can display and decode digital CCs.

There are several cable provider actually are not converting analog cables to digital CC or supporting it in HDTV in some towns that deaf folks are complaining about it.

Again there no standard law for digital CC and the existing CC law is so old and for analog signal only.

I am using both MythTV and SageTV which is a DVR and it decodes and play CC overlay on video from either digital or analog source before sending out to TV or HDTV. It also plays DVD as well too. I know it "extra" work but it the only way I can enjoy CC from digital sources now days. But CC on my digital is transparent black background and very nice. It have white text on black same old CC but black more transparent and I can change fonts if I wanted to.

Ahh... so basically there's nothing I can do. I guess I'll stick with my dvd player and watch movies using subtitles. I can live with that but if I can't, I can always use one of the other tvs.

Thanks for your reply!

I finally solved the problem. I took off the HDMI cable and used component cables (red, green, purple) on a friend's advice and the captions showed up! My friend said that HDMI cables don't have the capability to move the cc from the DVD player to the TV. So I returned the HDMI cable and am now using the component cables. Whew!

That great to hear! What brand DVD player and model # did you get??

I have tested upcovert dvd player before on compoment cables and it still strip the CC but maybe now manfactature are changing it.

I am glad to see you got it working and let me know what brand please!

Yes, Component work CC on mode 480i only but 480p / 720p / 1080i / 1080p will not work CC

That's not true. Stop misleading informations... Mine is working on 1080p.

right now, there are problem with CC issues go thru on either Component and HDMI which isn't required under FCC. Very few does work great. And few input device to HDTV enable CC support.

How? I tired buy Samsung DVD Player not work for 1080p

what your dvd player company and model, please? but I know work for computer with dvd driver but I don't want subtitle, only CC
Thank you

then try Sony DVD player or Sony BD player, make sure if support upscale too.

It's not long time to be fixed, that let analog CC to be displayed on higer than 480i, probably would solve the issue in before 2010, even all HDTV must have CC source on all video, not only S-Video or composite cable.

I am curious what brand and model upcovert dvd player you got CC to work on 1080 and what video-out method did you use? HDMI? Compoment?

Thank you

Hmmm, I'd consider buying a upconverting DVD player so I can playback them in progressive scan with closed captioning if I knew which model it is which wouldn't be too expensive to buy. I'd connect it with component cables. I don't like the picture quality with composite cables, not the greatest picture on a HDTV. It's bearable, though.

I will buy try another DVD Player today, I will let you know on private, but I know they don't care tell us, oh well

posted that it work in 1080.

read my post again.. rhr didnt say anything about DVD players. you all misunderstanding. second, all dvd players are working but it has nothing do with dvd players. it has do with HDTV. I already created a thread where I explained how to work to display CC via component. Pacman knows what I am talking about. im sure he remembered whee my thread is.

This topic is about >>>CC ON UPCOVERTING DVD PLAYER<<< so basically you were off subject talking about something else that can play CC in 1080 in this topic then which confused the heck out of everyone reading this topic.

We did not misunderstood you.

Your post lack detail information so we using our best judgement since this is a "cc on upconvertining dvd player" topic that the posts are about CC via componement or hdmi from upcoverting dvd player to HDTV at 1080 and we can only guess since your post is plain "That's not true. Stop misleading informations... Mine is working on 1080p." IN CC ON UPCOVERTING DVD PLAYER TOPIC

That why most of us were asking what brand dvd player are you speaking of because we have not yet found a upcoverting dvd player capable of displaying CC via either componment out or hdmi out at any higher than just a 480.

And rhr doesn't need to say anything about dvd player becasue this topic is already about dvd player

my 1 1/2 year old Sony DVD player is working on CC via Component on 1080i because I bought a new model sony HDTV. There is no CC when I hook up it with old model HDTV. It has do with Video port that has program for CC decoder or something.

First, Does your HDTV support CC via component source? like able to enable on CC via menu when run into component mode, it require to be support at first before CC can be accepted from DVD player, not all HDTV can support it.

Both of Sony and Vizio offers that, Vizio was added after one member was requested about CC work on component source.
