deafdyke, that's awesome! I'm currently taking voice lessons myself. So far, so good! To my surprise, I'm able to sing 1st soprano. Later this year I plan to take lessons in the flute, clarinet, harp or piano. (Decisions, decisions! <grin>) I can't wait!

I also remember reading about the band downing mentioned. If I find any information about them, I'll post it here.

I just did a Google search and found the name of the band: "Beethoven's Nightmare." Cool name!

You can read more about them here:

Hear Again, the vocal techniques that we dhh kids learn in speech therapy are the same ones that actors and singers use....when I was in elemntary school I used to rehearse class plays in speech therapy!

deafdyke: What a creative idea to practice class plays during your speech therapy sessions! I'll have to make a note of that suggestion because it's a good one.

The vocal techniques you learn as a child who is dhh makes perfect sense because actors and singers also need to learn how to project their voice, use proper diction/pronunciation and breath control. That's something I'm learning about in my voice lessons. Over the past 10 years I've had severe-profound hearing loss, my speech has suffered a little bit (I've been told by others I have some speech qualities that give away the fact I don't hear well -- whatever they are) and I'm now learning how to pronounce words clearly and correctly without slurring them. I'm also learning how to control the volume and intonation of my voice. I'm enjoying the learning experience -- although I'm not so sure I would have liked speech therapy as a child!

My dad has worked in music store for many years selling musical instruments. He taught music in high school and was band director. He has become almost deaf about 25 years ago but continued to do band directing. Now he is deaf and still band direct in his church and plays horns and saxophone. He also can write music. I don't think he is famous, but lots of musicians knows him because they bought musical instruments from him. The famous old drummer Buddy bought drum from my dad.

I played violin since I was 4 years old. (I was HoH as a kid, lost more and more hearing, now Deaf since teens. I have Severe-Profound loss in my left, Profound in my right.)

I also play guitar, and sing. I'm not famous, but it is possable for deafies to play and enjoy music! I have been starting recording at a friend's studio lately, nothing is finished yet, but it is great fun!

When I was at drama school we also used many of the same techniqes as back in ST!

HoneyShot: Wow, I think that's *great* you sing and play the guitar!! I wish I would have found this board sooner! <smile> I've had severe-profound hearing loss for the past 10 years and gave up singing and instrumental music during all of that time. I now have a CI (which has been activated for 6 months) and am just beginning to get back into music. I'm currently taking voice lessons and loving every minute of it! At some point I also want to learn how to play the flute and piano again like I did many years ago. If you'd like to chat privately about music, feel free to PM me anytime! I'd love to read more about your experiences!!

I like to sing, too but I think I am too late, lol. I wish, dhh should have a karaoke contest. So, I will know who will be the best singer to show the world that they can sing to prove it if there is possibility in the future.

Thank you Hear Again!

That's so great that you are getting back into music! I bet you're excited, to be able to! The great thing about voice as a musical instrument, is you can take it anywhere with you. I had some great voice teachers over the years, and loved those lessons too!

I will PM you tomorrow, sure! (I need to go and do a few things and get to bed, it's now late here) I'd love to talk music too!

Honeyshot: I'm *very* excited! One of the first things I promised myself after getting my CI was to get back into music again. I'm having a great time. I just wish I wouldn't have given up music after all these years. Oh well! You can't change the past. I'll wait to hear from you tomorrow! There's no rush. Looking forward to chatting more!

The guitar amp at feet idea is a really neat idea. I never would have thought about that. See if he might want to try bass guitar. THe vibrations would be alot easier to feel, and its also easier to learn on.

And Hear Again, right on!

Forgot to add that sometimes I borrow my kid's Songbird Ocarina and play with it even though I don't ask him. I had an electric piano from my cousin given to me. She got that music from her company at Motown she used to work there. I only know how to play a piano keyboard with two name of songs "Oh America" & "Twinkle Little Star".

Deaf musicians

I found this CD on CDBaby for a deaf musician. But apparently he has an implant.

Makes sense what you say about actors and singers using similar techniques.

While I am hearing, I have taught myself to sing, and I've been having to pay a lot of attention lately to things I wouldn't normally take into account when I speak--all the things you mentioned like breath control, projecting, and also having to feel where I produce the sound from.

What's interesting is, I had a public speaking workshop a few days ago, and found that I no longer had the trouble in projecting my voice across a room that I used to. I have a very tiny voice, but apparently my work with singing taught me some lessons in how to get a lot more out of it than I was before. The trick turned out not to be as much in volume, but in altering the tone to make it sharper...not sure how to explain it, but it works...

Playing with a speaker or an amp near is a good idea for for musicians playing electric. Deaf people have been involved in music for ages. It's nothing new to seasoned musicians. My family line is filled with long time pros including Jack Teagarden the famous jazz blues musician who played some with Louis Armstrong. Just because you dont hear does not neciserily mean much when it comes to being a musician. I'm a Violinist of 18yrs. I am also deaf.

Hi!
I think that this is a great topic.
I think it would be great to have more deaf musicians on tv and on the radio too.
I started composing music when I was 6 years old and have composed and played music everyday for the last 20 years. I am also a synthesizer programmer and program all my own sounds using different waveforms to create sounds that I can hear well with hearing aids. I would love to see and hear other deaf musician's music. Maybe there could be a thread for people to post videos of their work. I have a twin sister who is also deaf and we have a band called "Jumelle" which is French for twins. We both wear hearing aids and have lost more hearing over the years but still play and compose music everyday. We also have a YouTube channel under "jumellemusic". Some of the songs are old and others are newer.
My sister recently played for President Obama, I am so proud of her.
She has kept me strong and has been an inspiration to me when I am sad about our hearing loss. I had better hearing growing up and no matter what, I will never give up music. We both published 2 CDs in middle and high school and will write a 3rd one day hopefully. Studio time is expensive! Anyway music is what keeps me happy and makes life so much more enjoyable! I listen to 80's music pretty much all day. lol My hearing friend thinks Im crazy. lol Anyway hope to find more deaf/hoh musicians and hear thier work. Come on over to our channel and leave a comment! We would love to hear some feedback from others in the same situation.
Have a great day everyone! and Keep playin it loud!!!
