DODGE CITY, KAN. — At least three major grocery store chains have recalled some of their ground beef packages because they could be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

Winn-Dixie Stores Inc., Publix Super Markets Inc. and Kroger Co. announced the recalls mainly in the southeastern U.S. and said they stem from problems at the National Beef Packaging Co. of Dodge City, Kan.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Friday that National Beef was recalling more than 60,000 pounds of beef after the Ohio Department of Agriculture found the bacteria during routine testing.

The recalls affect products sold mainly in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina and Tennessee, but the meat was sent to several distributors and could have been repackaged for consumers and sold nationwide.

The agriculture department says there have been no reports of illnesses. A spokesman for National Beef said the company has never had a problem with E. coli. It is checking processes and procedures in an effort to find the cause and prevent it from happening again, the spokesman said.

E. coli can be deadly and can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and other problems. The agriculture department cautioned people to cook ground beef to a temperature of at least 160 degrees. The temperature should be checked with a food thermometer that measures internal temperature, the agency said.

The meat also was distributed to meat packing companies in Detroit and Indianapolis and to Wal-Mart operations in Indiana, Pennsylvania and Wyoming, National Beef said.

At Kroger, the nation's largest traditional grocery store chain, the recalled products include ground chuck, ground beef patties, and meatballs and meat loaf made in the stores. Packages have "sell by" dates of July 29 through Aug. 12. At Publix, the products include meatballs, meat loaf, ground chuck patties, stuffed peppers, seasoned salisbury steak and others with "sell by" dates of July 25 through Aug. 12. Winn-Dixie products include ground chuck and patties with "sell-by" label dates from July 31 to Aug. 12.

The companies said people should return the beef to their stores for a full refund.

For some reason, I went to pick up more ground beef, but felt uneasy about it, so I do not have any. Hubby saw this headline and has asked me to please not buy anymore of it at all. Since I have my meat grinder on my Kitchenaid Mixer, I can grind my own. I will just make sure to sterilize all the parts first.

Darn, I wanted to have teriyaki scramburger for dinner this week!

Teriyaki Scramburger

1 pound ground meat
Sesame oil
1 teaspoon ginger (recipe says grated, but I use powder)
1 Tablespoon sugar
Soy sauce -- up to half a cup

Heat ginger in small amount of sesame oil. Add meat, breaking it up into clumps as if you were making spaghetti meat sauce.

When the meat is finished cooking, add the sugar. Stir, than add enough soy sauce to coat the meat.

Goes well with rice and steamed veggies!

But not this week! :D

Bought some from Winn Dixie yesterday...... I foresee going back to the grocery store tomorrow.

Whole Foods where I am has lots of Bobs Red Mill products - and that company actually has a ton of different flours and seed grinds for baking and cooking.

I can get Bob's Mill at one of my local grocery stores. It's a good line of products. Oatmeal, flours, etc.

My family has all decided to go meat free with the exception of seafood.

You can buy Bob's TVP online from amazon. Free shipping if you spend $25 for items directly from amazon. I've got a recipe around here somewhere.

Last week is was ground turkey that was tainted! I do not recall never having meat recalled when I was kid. We cooked our meat rare all the time.

The government used to inspect the packing plants. Now, it's a free for all.

After I finish reading the book called 'The Jungle' by Upton Sinclair I stopped eating meat for years! I know it was written way before I was born but it grossed me out !

I do recall that book, yup, whatdidyousay- it was kinda gross book!
hubby remembers when he was a kid eating raw or undercooked meat and that it was just generally much more acceptable.

And is was more acceptable to made homemade mayonnaise when I was kid .
I wash my eggs before breaking them.

An inspector didn't do their PHIS like they should have, otherwise this would have been caught before the State of Ohio tested for it. Shame...
