NATICK, Mass. — A white police sergeant accused of racism after he arrested renowned black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. at his home insisted Wednesday he won't apologize for his treatment of the Harvard professor, but President Barack Obama said police had acted "stupidly."

Gates has demanded an apology from Sgt. James Crowley, who had responded to the home near Harvard University to investigate a report of a burglary and demanded the scholar show him identification. Police say Gates at first refused and then accused the officer of racism.

Gates said Crowley walked into his home without his permission and only arrested him as the professor followed him to the porch, repeatedly demanding the sergeant's name and badge number because he was unhappy over his treatment.

Obama, during a prime-time news conference, said Wednesday he didn't know what role race played in the incident but added that police in Cambridge, a city neighboring Boston, "acted stupidly" in arresting Gates even after he offered proof that he was in his own home.

"I think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry," Obama said. "Number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home. And number three — what I think we know separate and apart from this incident — is that there is a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately, and that's just a fact."

He said federal officials need to continue working with local law enforcement "to improve policing techniques so that we're eliminating potential bias."

Crowley said Wednesday he's disappointed by the heated national debate triggered by the incident and insisted he followed proper procedures in arresting Gates last week on a charge of disorderly conduct. The charge was dropped Tuesday.

Officers were responding to the home Gates rents from Harvard after a woman reported seeing "two black males with backpacks" trying to force open the front door, according to a police report. Gates, who had returned from a trip overseas with a driver, said he had to shove the door open because it was jammed. He was inside, calling the company that manages the property, when police arrived.

Gates was accused by police of "tumultuous" behavior toward the officers. But Gates countered by saying Crowley was clearly responding to racial profiling and "couldn't understand a black man standing up for his rights, right in his face."

In a region with a tortured racial history, two overarching arguments have emerged about the incident. Police supporters charge that Gates, director of Harvard's W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research, was responsible for his own arrest by overreacting.

Those sympathetic to Gates counter that the officer should have defused the situation and left the home as soon as he established that Gates was the resident, not a burglar.

Crowley said he's grateful he has the support of his police force. He said he's not worried about any possible disciplinary action.

"There will be no apology," he said outside his home Wednesday.

Cambridge police and the police officers' union have declined to comment.

But there was plenty of blame being spread around by the public, through talk shows, blogs, newspaper online forums and water cooler chats. Even the hosts of a sports radio show in Boston spent much of Wednesday morning faulting Gates.

Gov. Deval Patrick, who is black, said he was troubled and upset over the incident. Cambridge Mayor Denise Simmons, who also is black, has said she spoke with Gates and apologized on behalf of the city, and a statement from the city called the July 16 incident "regrettable and unfortunate."

What happened between Gates and Crowley at the professor's home remains in dispute.

Police say Gates yelled at the officer, accused him of racial bias and refused to calm down after the officer demanded Gates show him identification to prove he lived there. Gates denies that he yelled at the officer, other than to repeatedly ask his name and badge number, and he says he readily turned over his driver's license and Harvard ID to prove his residence and identity.

Gates said he was "outraged" by the arrest, wants an apology from Crowley and would use the experience to help make a documentary about racial profiling in the United States.

"This isn't about me, this is about the vulnerability of black men in America," he said.

He said the incident made him realize how vulnerable poor people and minorities are "to capricious forces like a rogue policeman, and this man clearly was a rogue policeman."

Police report here: Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Police Report - July 23, 2009

His version was corroborated by the Harvard officer who showed up. Several witnesses also agreed. It's questionable whether the arrest was necessary. What's beyond dispute is that the professor is the one being racist- not the officer.

I have read two separate police reports that were written by Sergeant James Crowley and Officer Carlos Figueroa.

According to Officer Figueroa's report, Office Figueroa heard Sgt. Crowley asking Gates for information, and Gates replied,"NO I WILL NOT!" Gates yelled constantly at Sgt. Crowley. Sgt. Crowley tried to calm him, but Gates shouted," You don't know who your messing with!"

Gates did not show proper ID. He showed his Harvard ID which doesn't have his home address on it and could easily be ripped off.

If Gates would have been calm, he wouldn't have been arrested in the first place.

I disagree. Anyone can say "This is my house. I live here." But you never know that anyone can be a thief or a killer unless one gives the proof of ID with photo and address on it. Sadly, it does happen.

My siblings and I are Mexican. Officers requested for my siblings' IDs several times before, and it went smooth. How? They obeyed. If the officer asks me for my ID, I would hand over my ID to the officer, not throwing tantrums, or racial bias around and yelling,"Racist! Racist!"

Topic title is kind of misleading since it appears that the professor is the one being racist, the officer is probably sorry that the whole thing turned out the way it did and need not apologize.

This is where a tape recorder would have been very nice to have. I know that out in the LA area, most cops carry one in their shirt pocket (usually for traffic stops and what not) that would have been very handy to have here. If you are yelling at a cop, you can deny it all you want... until the cop pulls out the tape anyways....

Gates was completely out of line and so is Obama.

Obama better not start giving heat such as demanding that these officers who were doing their jobs be fired.

I for one would be glad to produce identification to prove that this is my house. Why didn't the officers checked those who broke into his home and ransacked his stuff? They should have done that from the start.

Nonetheless, these officers was not in the wrong.

Gates obviously over reacted. He bluntly said he told him to his face.. So obviously he was all in the officers face.

If Gates would have just cooperated and shown his ID. He would not even be in this situation.

He made a mountain out of a mole hill.

Shame on Gates for accusing cop of being racist

Shame on Obama for commenting on this as racism

Shame on both of them for playing a race card

:nono:

Last I read, the charges were "dropped"! Say what?? I feel the officer was doing his job.

I think Obama should apologize to Cambridge police for calling them stupid because it is very highly uncalled for.

Oh geez he already made that stupid comment without gathering all necessary and relative information first.

Cop who arrested black scholar is profiling expert

Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class on racial profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job by former police Commissioner Ronny Watson, who is black, said Academy Director Thomas Fleming.

"I have nothing but the highest respect for him as a police officer. He is very professional and he is a good role model for the young recruits in the police academy," Fleming told The Associated Press on Thursday.

I would say this Gates guy just has not experienced what happens when meeting up with the law before and was getting his lesson. They have a way of teaching that even the smartest citizen can soon figure out that it is better to be respectful and courteous than to be mouthy and rude. Doesn't matter what color you are be mouthy and rude and you will not like the outcome. Obama should have kept his two cents out of this one.

Did you know Crowley tried to save late NBA star Reggie Lewis when Lewis collapsed on the basketball court some years ago?

No I didn't, well, that just shows his character then.

Gates is an asshole.

Not only that.. Gates was already fueled up for this. His students constantly complain that the cops are racist. So he already had it in his head that this cops was racially profiling him. Not even giving the cop a chance.

I understand that their are some bad cops out there. Gates needs to go after them. Not some cop that is doing his job.

There was no racism involved.

Gates was being a hypocrite and he did NOT cooperate properly with the police.

So he is the one who should apologize to the cop instead.

Harvard prof Gates is half-Irish, related to cop who arrested him.

Two men at center of controversy linked by Irish heritage

Henry Louis Gates Jr., the black professor at the center of the racial story involving his arrest outside his Harvard house, has spoken proudly of his Irish roots.

Bizarrely, he and the Cambridge, Mass officer who arrested him, James Crowley, both trace their ancestry back to Niall of the Nine Hostages, a famous Irish chieftain.

In a PBS series on African American ancestry that he hosted in 2008, Gates discovered his Irish roots when he found he was descended from an Irish immigrant and a slave girl.

He went to Trinity College in Dublin to have his DNA analyzed. There he found that he shared 10 of the 11 DNA matches with offspring of Niall of the Nine Hostages, the 4th century warlord who created one of the dominant strains of Irish genealogy because he had so many offspring.

Ironically, James Crowley, whose name in Gaelic means "hardy warrior' is also descended from the same line as Gates, having very close links to Niall of the Nine Hostages.

So the two men who took part in what is now an infamous confrontation outside the Gates home near Harvard this month are actually related through common Irish lineage --one of the more extraordinary aspects of the incident which has sparked worldwide headlines.

Gates is one of many famous African Americans with Irish heritage, including President Barack Obama and award-winning author Alice Walker.
