Dad sells son's 90-dollar video game online for more than 9000 - Yahoo! News

After catching his 15-year-old smoking pot, a father sold the hard-to-get "Guitar Hero III" video game he bought his son for 90 dollars for Christmas at an online auction, fetching 9,000 dollars.

The sale took place after the father spent two weeks searching for the video game for the Nintendo Wii gameboard.

"So I was so relieved in that I had finally got the Holy Grail of Christmas presents pretty much just in the nick of time. I couldn't wait to spread the jubilance to my son," the father wrote on the eBay website.

"Then, yesterday, I came home from work early and what do I find? My innocent little boy smoking pot in the back yard with two of his delinquent friends."

The man, a school teacher, who kept his identity private, said he sold the coveted video game to punish his son and discourage him from smoking dope.

The sale was a boon for the family's bank account, since the game the father purchased for 90 dollars (US) was finally sold to an Australian who plunked down 9,100 dollars for it.

The naughty son, however, will not go without a present on Christmas.

"I am still considering getting him a game for his Nintendo. Maybe something like Barbie as the Island Princess or Dancing with the Stars ... I know he will just love them," the father said, tongue-in-cheek.

Funny how he made a profit off his son's punishment! :giggle:

:jaw: wow! 9,000 is a lot of money for that GAME! It's so funny how that the father made a profit off his son's punishment!

:jaw:

*curious* Dad keep $9,100 for himself or return $9,100 to his son?

Dad would be STUPID if he gave son a single penny.

If he won´t return $9,100 to his son then is DISHONESTLY!!!! It´s a bad father role. Son will learn from his father... Those guitar belongs son whom he received the GIFT from his Dad but Dad took son´s guitar to sell because he caught his son smoking pot but he wasn´t realized that he made a huge profit. Guitar is belongs son... The money belongs him, not father... Gift is Gift, period.

I won bid at ebay to get game box for my younger son for birthday gift. My younger son decided to sell game box few months ago. Guess what, he sold game box and made double profit himself pretty good than I won for him. Should I tell him to give his share back to me? No because this gift, I gave him which mean is belongs him. He can decide with that gift what he want because it belongs to him.

Liebling, the father had not yet given the gift, therefore it did not belong to the son YET (Christmas is still 8 days away). Because of what the son did, he did not deserve the gift. Besides, all the kid would do is go buy more pot with the proceeds. Kinda defeats the purpose huh?

Ohhhhh I got it...

Excuse me for misread the article... Yes, you are right that the gift he made for his son is not belong his son yet. Yes, Dad can do what he wants because he didn´t give gituar to his son yet.

Yeah

I thought he took his son´s guitar to sell ebay... what Dad did is fine.

:) Liebling, are you against taking your children's possessions away for short periods of time (aka "grounding") as a form of punishment?

Yes and No

I don´t take toys or games away for short time to punish them but turn their favorite TV program off or sent them to bed one hour earlier when my boys are little.

Now my boys are pre-teenage and teenager - I don´t have much problem with them... All what I do is sent them off to bed time one hour early or turn their favorite TV off, that´s all. Of course I would turn internet off if any happen. I use those method as a form of punishment.

I'm not surprised about these things. I've heard of similar stories in the past where parents sell their kids trading cards, video games, video game consoles, etc.

I'm impressed that he managed to auction it off for $9,000. Damn.

Yes I learned about this in several threads in the past. I am total speechless over the parents´s behavior and also humliation as well. It affect kids´s self-esteem.. I dont agree to take my children´s things to sell as punishment to ebay or whatever.

wow, good thing is Dad didn´t give guitar to his son YET. I can image what should Dad do if he ALREADY gave guilar to his son as gift and then took his gift away to sell ebay to make fat profit... Would he keep it or what?

 I thought you did approve of alternative ways of disciplining children. You always post that parents should use creative ways to discipline their children instead of spanking them. Well, that is exactly what the dad did. He used a creative way to teach his son a lesson.

It wasn't a guitar; it was a video game.

Why shouldn't the dad keep the profit? The game was his property. Would you feel better if dad took the game outside, laid it on the driveway, and drove over it? What difference does it make how he disposed of it? The point was, the son didn't get it in his hot little, pot tokin' hands.

FAKE.

$9,000 for a video game that is easy to find? No, I don't think so. $300, $500, maybe, because you'd have to export it to Australia. Not $9K. Shenigans.

I'm sorry but I'm going with Liebling on this, I do not sell my children's "gifts" on eBay as a punishment, sounds so greedy to me. The father could be lying for all I know just to make more profile out of a 90 dollars worth of video game. I wouldn't be surprise if the father goes into the son's room and try to take more things and sell them on eBay, for more $

The father is no better than the son IMO, he could have kept it or return it back to the store to refund his money but no he had to be soo greedy!

Liebling was correct Reba, Guitar Hero III comes with a guitar and a game. My oldest has one too. You cannot play this game without a guitar anyhow.

(going to double-check to see if my son brought these items separated)

Yeah, I thought gifts were something that was given and received....not a reward that is earned. That's why its called a "gift". Its given no matter whether it has been earned or is thought to be deserved or not.

The boy put himself on the naughty list. A lump of coal for the boy, I say! The boy ended up missing out on a terrific gift because of his lack of respect toward his father.

That's life.

We have guitar hero I & II. You can buy the guitar separately or as a package. In fact, if you already have a guitar, no need to purchase another one. I have been looking for guitar hero III (game only) since it came out and it has been virtually impossible to find.

I'm with Banjo on this one. If a kid is acting out of hand, no sense in rewarding bad behavior. The gift was never given. My stepdaughter got caught doing something extremely naughty just before her birthday this year. We ended up cancelling her birthday party on account of her poor choices. What is the use of discipline if it is not meaningful to the child?

Wow, I guess parents raise their children the way they see fit, but however I don't agree with that punishment, sorry but I do respect you for how you discipline your own children.

Yes you're right about the game, I already asked my oldest son, he said it was sold separated when he brought his.

But Eve I don't see how your story is related to this one here, the father did not go back to the store to get his refund bk or cancelled a party but instead he went through eBay, humliation his son in front of a bunch of strangers online and sell the game for 100 time more than what is really worth, to me its greedy and selifish , it not teaching his son nothing, it making a big profit out of this IMO
