Original story: Police say they arrested 66-year-old Larry Brinkin, the high-profile gay activist, on possession of child pornography on Friday night.

Brinkin, a community icon who led the fight for the city to recognize same-sex partnerships, was arrested and booked into San Francisco County Jail, police said.

He posted bail and was released Saturday, according to a jail spokesman.

Police Spokesman Officer Albie Esparza would only say that the case was still under investigation, and would give no more details at this time.

Brinkin retired from the Human Rights Commission in 2010, and has been a beloved member of the gay community, with the Board of Supervisors even declaring the first week of February as "Larry Brinkin Week." At the time of his retirement, he earned more than $135,000 yearly.

We put in a call to Theresa Sparks, executive director of the Human Rights Commission, told us this allegation is "beyond hard to believe."

"It's almost incredulous, there's no way I could believe such a thing," Sparks told us. "He's always been one of my heroes, and he's the epitome of human rights activist -- this is man who coined phrases we use in our daily language. I support Larry 100 percent, hopefully it will all come out in the investigation."

(Update 3:30 p.m.): According to the search warrant, SFPD acted after receiving a tip from the Los Angeles Police Department, which obtained from AOL an e-mail exchange between a Los Angeles user and zack3737@aol.com. Police say they linked the AOL address to Brinkin's IP address; he is owner of the account and paid for AOL service with his credit card.

The warrant claims these e-mails contained images of children as young as perhaps a year old being sodomized by and performing oral sex on adult men. Zack3737@aol.com -- whom the police allege is Brinkin -- provided graphic commentary on the photos of interracial adult-child sex. Comments included "I loved especially the ****** 2 year old getting nailed. Hope you'll continue so I can see what the little blond bitch is going to get. White Power! White Supremacy! White Dick Rules!"

The AOL e-mail account was also linked to Yahoo! Groups centering around discussions of child porn, according to the search warrant. Investigators say they additionally found e-mails sent from Brinkin's now-defunct city e-mail account to zack3737@aol.com.

First, I'm very strongly oppose to child pornography and they are very highly illegal.

I have ZERO sympathy for all people whoever make and distribute the child pornography, even for straight and GLBT people too.

I hope Larry Brinkin rots in the jail and he is already ruining some portion of GLBT rights and I never make associate with S.F. Gay Rights Icon.

That's isolated case because numerous GLBT people are opposing to child pornography, even HRC too.

That is terrible, taking advantage of these children. AND, making gay people look bad. I have a beef with HRC about some of the things that have happened in the past, but I can't blame them for not knowing about his history. I'm glad he got caught!

Why not post a horrific news article with the suspect being a white Protestant American citizen? Just for a change of pace? All of these "black people beat white man" or "black couple murders white pizza driver" or "gay advocate charged with child porn" or "gay men take pictures of themselves giving Reagan picture the finger" seem to be a focal point with you. Are you trying to keep us informed on all crimes against the Master Race? Why not a few white collar crimes committed by white men, without a party affiliation? Is this possible, or are your computer settings avoiding such stories?

HRC didn't know about Larry Brinkin involvement in child pornography until recent, they now know about that. HRC isn't support anything that is very unethical, immoral and illegal, especially child pornography, it is highly illegal under federal law.

Clarify: This case is isolated FROM pro-GLBT group because majority of GLBT people oppose to child pornography.

I'm NOT saying about this case is SOLE because there are people who did make child pornography, regardless on race, sex orientation, religion, etc.
