Don't get too excited by that headline -- Nintendo's Wii will still end up as the number one next-generation system by year's end (it's too different and too cheap not to). But in the battle of horsepower between Sony and Microsoft, it will be the PlayStation 3 that has the slight edge on Washington's Mega Power.

Don't get me wrong, Microsoft will still maintain its number one position in America -- running on the strong momentum of its head start, Xbox Live, and the release of Halo 3 and Mass Effect. But Sony will bounce back in the States and Canada, and get within a few million units because of aggressive marketing and restructured value, as well as a horde of strong titles of its own (Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Ratchet and Clank, the Naughty Dog game, etc).

Despite being third in the US, however, the Japanese and European markets will bolster Sony's numbers big time. Both territories are high on the PlayStation brand name, and Japan's PS3 installed base already doubles that of the Xbox 360 despite coming out 11 months later. The UK and Australian launches in March will likely be just as dominant, and when combined with sales worldwide will place Sony in a slight global lead just before the apple drops in New York.

Yea, pp have to remember that xbox360 had one year head start. let wait ps3's heavy hitting titles to come out. then ps3 will owns xbox360.

I find that hard to believe...

of course...the PS2 came before the Xbox did and the PS2 and Xbox had both same price tag at first but the PS2 still sold better than the Xbox did anyway but now the tables are turned and the Xbox360 got a year head start before PS3 so...both prices are different this time and we perfer cheaper prices, dont we? of course we do...

Don't forget that Dreamcast had a head start of one year. Look what happened.

I think both PS3 and Xbox 360 will be able to co-exist.

Yup, same with Sega Saturn and it was released in April 1995 then PS1 and N64 already overtaked Saturn in 1996 or 1997 before Sega discontinued it.

Not one of head start...

MS had reason to release 360 so early because NVIDIA ceased GPU out from Xbox then cannot make anymore and ahead to work on Xbox 360.
NVIDIA ceased production of the Xbox's GPU in August 2005, which marked the end of Xbox production and the quick release of the Xbox 360.

Blah... PS3 will never beat Xbox 360. The only way they can beat Xbox 360 is if they drop the price and the other overkill technical crap.

I will always put my money towards Wii and XBox360. PS3 will wait until around 2009. The way I see it, PS3 seems to be kind of like a supercomputer, but not quite--even though it's a high-end console. It would be better if Sony could release a PS2.5 version that uses HDMI and component video outputs, with no Blu-ray support, less performing processor with less number of cores, etc. to make it just around $350 to $450 and just buy a seperate Blu-ray player in the future as Blu-ray matures...

100% disagree

ALL PS3 games are made on BD format, also PS3 (60GB) is cheaper than 360 if you compare with all add-on, such as HD-DVD, wireless adapter, VGA cable (If anyone need capture 1080p) and few others. I will REFUSE to use analog for PS3 like component cable or VGA.

Also, you made stupid answer since real 100% doubt about Sony would do it then go little research before jumping on wrong conclusion.

You never know if can be happen since both of them are same price because you need few add-on for 360, that which is more expensive than PS3 with 60GB including BD and WiFi.

All PS3 games are made on BD format, that which kill 360 so badly and agree with someone said PS3 would overtake 360 by end of year.

Sony's goal will be 6 million sold by March 2007 after release in Europe.

Research: Done.
Sorry, my opinion and my point of view.

That's really funny....I don't think you understand.....

PS3=All games and DVD movies use Blu ray support

XB360=All games use regular DVD which is not enough space for big hit games and they have to delete some stuff that exists on the PS3.

For the price....PS3 has everything you need except the composite they included....it can play a 50 GB disc containing a game or a movie beautifully on your gleaming HDTV.

So basically, 360 is made for now...not the future.. They have predicted that PS3 will win over in the long haul.

P.S. It's not 2009....it's 2007 right now. We are WAY behind Japan's technology and we need to catch up, basically. PS3 is the future of gaming consoles, period!

We may be behind the japanese techology but are we REALLY ready for such HD stuff? Xbox360 and PS3 are only the beginging of the HD evloution...

same goes for HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

I understand Blu-ray seems to be getting more popular than HD-DVD, but regular DVD is still around so I rather wait til either HD format REALLY wins.

I'm glad I cleared things up to you. I plan to get a PS3 too once I find out how much tax refund I get.

I dont know when I would ever get a PS3 lol...

maybe in afew years by the price drop or a possible PS3 remake model like Sony did with PS1 and PS2? (smaller versions of the same brand)

Yup, we are ready for HD era.

If you want non-HD support then sticking on Wii.
