The answer might be obvious for others, but it is not for me. I'm still new to relay systems.

I'm starting a job next month. My workforce has purchased this phone for me: ZVRS - Z-20.

http://www.zvrsbusiness.com/external/pdf_files/userguide/Z20UserGuide.pdf

I originally requested a captel phone because I prefer captioning.

Here is my question - does ZVRS do captioning? From the instruction manual, it doesn't look like it. I don't use ASL regularly enough to be able to accept phone calls in ASL...just wondering if I am screwed...

thanks!

I'm using Z-20 device at home. No, It's only videophone. But, try other captel phone for you. https://www.captioncall.com/captioncall

umm -- your work PURCHASED a e20? what do you see on screen after its finished booting up? if it doesnt have a blue Z then its not from ZVRS. I am not sure why they purchased one, but its best to get one for free from zvrs under your name so the software is already modified to the point its more deaf freindly. The "captioning" part is not really a captioning but its more of a electronic whiteboard. It comes up automatically when the terp hears a phone number about to be given out, or code or address or something so you can read and write down.

Did you explain to your employer exactly what you need?

Some employers have this assumption that if you're deaf, you're an expert in ASL.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

When I was initially hired, they asked about what "device" I wanted, I gave them only one suggestion - captel phone, gave them a link and explained that I would need another line. The suggestion was given by a friend. I never stated directly in the email that I don't use ASL. I did mention that I used captionist all throughout college and it worked well for me. I got an email a month later saying they got the Z-20 phone and I had to write back kindly informing them that my ASL is not strong enough to use the phone.

They want me to use i711 - of which I can't sign up for because I'm not a resident of California yet (I'm working on it - I need legal document proving that I intending on staying in CA before taking drivers license test).

So now I'm a little stuck. I'm thinking about getting the captel phone that evo-dragon suggested as backup if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. But changing state residency is a pain in my butt right now.

I'm a little nervous about the situation because I know that using a phone is part of the requirements of this job - and I don't want to show up not being able to do this task.

The people I'm working for seem really nice though and I am sure they will be understanding, but I want to do the job well since it is my first "adult" job.

@radioman

I haven't actually seen the phone in person. I don't start the job for another week. The link they gave me was the same as the link I provided in the first post. From what I read and what Evo-dragon said, this phone is not optimal for my communication preferences.

I do use english-order pigeon ASL with deaf friends but I'm working in science/technical field (physics) and I just prefer captioning.

Ok, I see your ASL is not strong enough for videophone with relay service.

Try use i711 or IP-relay app (iTune store or Google Play store) download for use your own smartphone, iPad, tablet and laptop for travel or business as like TTY style.

Unless you need sign up register before active your own phone number to i711 or IP-RELAY account on your devices.

ok -- when you start your job, post back and let up know how things go for you. at this point you just have to wait and see.
