11-year-old gives birth to baby girl... after going into labor at her wedding

An 11-year-old girl became one of the world's youngest mothers - after she went into labor at her wedding.

Kordeza Zhelyazkova, from Sliven, Bulgaria, was still wearing her wedding dress and tiara when she was rushed to the hospital, where she gave birth to a 5-pound, 8-ounce girl.

"I'm not going to play with toys anymore - I have a new toy now," Kordeza told reporters as she showed off little Violeta.

Kordeza - who got pregnant two weeks after her 11th birthday - told the News of the World: "It feels strange...now I must grow up. I am not going back to school."

The baby's 19-year-old dad, Jeliazko, met Kordeza when he rescued her from bullies in the playground.

"I was walking past the school when I saw some boys mocking her and I told them to leave her alone," he said. "Then she arranged to meet me and asked me out on our first date.

"We didn't plan to have sex or a baby, although I fell in love with Kordeza the moment I saw her," Jeliazko said.

But within a week, Kordeza was pregnant - and Jeliazko was facing six years in jail for having sex with a minor. The age of consent in Bulgaria is 14.

"I thought she was 15," he said. "She didn't tell me she was 11. I was really scared."

"I didn't want to say in case he wouldn't fancy me," Kordeza confessed.

"I didn't know I was pregnant until my grandmother saw I had put on weight," she added. "I just thought I'd eaten too many burgers."

"It's normal for our girls to have babies young," said Kordeza's grandmother Dida, 55. "It's our tradition. But I didn't want it for my Kordeza - I felt she was too young."

The family planned a three-day Roma wedding so Kordeza and Jeliazko could be married before the baby arrived.

But Kordeza went into labor on the second day. "I had been having pain in the morning and a couple of hours into the wedding, it got worse."

She was rushed to hospital and gave birth 20 minutes later.

"It was quite easy but painful, too," she said. "I was very happy when I saw her. She has a nose like me and hair like Jeliazko."

Violeta's grandmothers will be her guardians, and Kordeza and her daughter will receive about $115 a month in state benefits.

All I can say is

I'm speechless myself....seems she was more mature (physically) than most 11 yr. olds....The father, at age 19 is right where he belongs, in jail. No matter if she was 14, she was still too young, mentally, for motherhood.

The father didn't go to jail... he was facing the possibility. He even married the girl after they found out she was pregnant.

Besides, this is in Eastern Europe. The cultural norms there is a bit different. While we believe that having a kid in our 20s is too early, having them as a young adult over there is acceptable. However that is not to say having kids when you're 11 is normal-- even the grandmother acknowledged this. It is not NORMAL anywhere in the western world to have kids that young.

So you might want to refrain from making such comments about her being too young and so on. I happen to know a lot of exchange students who were married at 16, and only went to school overseas with their kids at their parents' so they can get a better education and emigrate after their academic career are over.

Very sad. :(

They are Gypsies?

She does look like she is an adult. I have seen kids in my 12 year old daughter's class who could pass for 18 or 19 years old. Scary! I hope they have a good future ahead of them.

SAme here! 12, 13 & 14 yr. olds "looking" like adults. Some girls do mature faster physically, I know that I did.

Yup, exactly. In lots of places, this is acceptable.

And for all those people who say that she is too young mentally and physically, I agree, but a friend of mine once said (she has a bachelor's in psychology) that maybe the reason why children act like children is because the parents treat them like children and they are not expected to grow up. That's why there are lots of 20 year olds who still act like they're 4.

Most of my friends were married before high school. One was pregnant at 11. Many were pregnant by 15. Few graduated high school. I left the area, as did one other. I have a masters, she has a bachelors. It was expected in those days, I guess her geographic area is like ours was. We worked, we grew, we cooked, sewed, it was normal. We could all take care of ourselves and families. Toys were out when boys were noticed.

Yes that is sad and it did indicate them to be Roma or Gypsies. The Roma were more of Hitler's targets and they are targets in all their places of travel and residence.

Roma is one subgroup of the people known as Romani. They are spread all over the world now.

What bothered/worried me most about the article was the following quote:

"I'm not going to play with toys anymore - I have a new toy now," Kordeza told reporters as she showed off little Violeta.

I seriously hope she doesn't see her daughter as a toy. She might have said this without thinking twice about her words in front of the reporter. If she does think that her baby is a toy then it's not looking all too good :(

"Many" girls from the eastern european countries get pregnant in their teen years but 11 years old I was pretty shocked at first. I also think that she doesn't look like an 11 year old. That she told her boyfriend to be 15 in order for him to like her is also "understandable" for that age. She only wanted him to like her back. Then to have protectless sex is (unfortunately) "understandable" if they didn't get proper sex education.

That's where the problem is.... people need more sex education in my POV.

I'm looking at the mother in the video and she certainly doesn't look like she's 11.

No way she is 11 years old! She looks much older than that.

Sex education is the key. That's why there aren't that much teen pregnancies, AIDS or HIV in such countries as Japan.
