OCALA, Fla. - A 42-year-old woman was rushed to a hospital after being bitten by a rattlesnake while shopping for plants at a Lowe's Home Improvement store.

The customer was moving garden items around Tuesday when she noticed a stinging feeling in her leg, officials said. Medics discovered she had been bitten twice on the right shin, the Ocala Star-Banner reported Wednesday.

Employees killed the 1-foot-long dusky pygmy rattlesnake with a yard tool. The snake is one of six poisonous varieties native to Florida.

Lowe's spokeswoman Karen Cobb said it wasn't clear where the snake came from. She said store employees scoured the area but found no other snakes, and the company wasn't aware of anything similar happening in Lowe's before.

"This is certainly an isolated situation," she said. "Garden centers are located outdoors, and they do contain live plants that are watered frequently. We certainly monitor them for any unwanted guests like the snake.

If id were her i call a lawyer and sue lowes for about 1.5 million Dollars. And you know how juries are in our leagal system.

Just like a man is suing the Home Depot because he was glued to a toilet seat in bathroom.

Simple solution , This is what I would do.

1. Put a strip of motion activiating sensor over the entrance of the door

2. If the snake attempts to enter

3. The alarm goes off then the snake will be angry and fight the employee's garden tools

Also post survillenance color t.v. cameras in real time at the entrance and have one security staff member watch for theives then the another security guard watches for snakes, come to think of it, A theif who steals things from the store is a snake too and catch the bastard in the act of stealing redhanded !!!!!! That simple solution will save lives and there will be no more snake bites but I would still keep a snake bite first aid kit, just in case of emergency.

.....

I have no words for this. O.o

I lived in the Verdugo Mtns in my wonder years and was bitten by a snake on my right thumb during one of my 'cartographic treks'. The folks there didnt raise alarm because the smake I described wasnt a poisonous snake but it left a fang scar on my thumb.

Guys can come in and steal garden tools and some of the ladies do steal too, small things like garden gloves or something like seeds off the rack stand etc. Some theives are bold enough to steal plants right away from the garden center. I have seen theives try to steal sitting wood benches with steel armchair rests on opposite sides. It is amazing what people will do to steal in the garden center. I used to work security watching the stores and be a prevention loss specialist and tackle suspects to the ground and get in a couple good fist fights once in a while with the suspects. I would take turns watching the main store then the car oil change / tire change center then watch the entrances to the bathroom to be sure no men go in the women's restroom and watch the bathroom entrances and the water foundation on camera to make sure nothing bad happened to the children then I got assigned to watch the garden center. I thought people are not likely to steal anything from the garden center but I was wrong !!!!!! This is usually done by illegal aliens or people living in poverty in bad areas that come out to steal in the nicer areas and we got quite a few suspects that were very rich and in their 50's. I once had to say no to a 83 years old lady and she never had a police record before. She stole some seeds and a few garden tools but I offered to pay for them. The boss said no .... and I told him go easy on her, she is old, man !!!!! The cops weren't too happy with the boss of the store so they let me pay for the things that she stole plus I asked her what else she needed and I paid for it. The police cheif had to tell the boss of the store to shut the hell up !!!!!!! She was very grateful and I wonder what happened to her. I hope she is still alive and doing good.

Aww thats awful - what unexpectant place to find a snake there!!

Just a freak accident, like the woman attacked by the deer in her own home. No big deal.

My dad is a manager at Lowe's and a squirrel got into their store once.

If you see snake, just leave immediately. So snake will not bite you. If you dont want to leave, snake will bite you.....

Ouch poor woman i feel bad for her because it seems like she probally didn't see the snake. It almost seems to me that someone might have planted the snake or idk that's just crazy

the snake probly came in with a shipment of live plants or something like that. the lady got treated fast so she should be ok.

Oh man, if i see a snake .. I wld ZOOM so fast considering my weight LOL...

First off i doubt the snakes will attack the garden tools unless the employee's are using them to fight off the snake and second animals will always find some way to get in like a small hole or something.

I once worked at kroger and had unknowingly cornered a cat behind some boxes. when i bent down to get one of those boxes it bit the hell out of my thumb and was rushed to the ER.

Animals are tricky. they dont think like people do so dont expect them to use the front door as if they just wanted to buy something lol.
