Hi,
I am a non-signer and I use signs sometimes to communicate with my deaf friends. I don't pretend. I use signs for communication purpose. So in your question, how do you distinguish who is pretending and how is not when signing? To answer my question, I think it's interesting to see a non-signer signing. I will just look at the face of his/her conversationer(s) to see how well they understand each other. I might join their conversation if they allow me.
