Hello,

I am studying British Sign Language, and our class have been asked to find out what the ASL sign is for the Republican Party.

Would you just sign elephant?

If anyone can help...thanks.

Nicky

According to Random House Webster's American Sign Language Dictionary

"Shake the right "R" hand, palm facing forward, from side to side in front of the right shoulder with a double movement."

The same sign is also used for "Republic."

I read in my book that for Dem. you just make a "D" and shake it a little bit. and the same for Rep. - Make a "R" and shake it a little.

You need to remember these are done small right in front of the shoulder.

"D" will = "where" if you place it wrong or move too much.

i think what shygirl means is that when you make the sign for democrat, you twist the "d" hand towards you and then away from you two or three times. democrat can also be signed in the way you described.

conversely, the sign for where is made by moving the "d" hand from left to right (i.e. side to side) a few times.

(if i'm wrong about that shygirl, let me know.)
