I met a deaf couple at Disneyland in Tokyo, Japan. The woman only knew three signs in ASL, "A", "B", and "C"... it was really amazing how even though we didn't share a language, we could still share our thoughts.
i think it's easer for two people without a common language to understand each other with as signed language as opposed to a spoken one.
