Toad Suck, Arkansas, voted ‘most unfortunate’ town name

A new poll across seven English-speaking countries has chosen Toad Suck, Arkansas, as having the "most unfortunate" town name in the United States.

Toad Suck, an unincorporated community in Perry County, took top dishonors, edging out Climax, Georgia, and Boring, Oregon.

The poll was conducted by the genealogy site Findmypast.com, and polled respondents in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

"Some people are disconcerted to learn that their forebears came from somewhere called Toad Suck, Roachtown or Monkey's Eyebrow," said Josh Taylor, genealogist and spokesperson for the site, in a press release.

Toad Suck reportedly takes its name from a once popular drinking location for boaters on the Arkansas River. The toadsuck.org site explains in more detail, "While they waited, they refreshed themselves at the local tavern there, to the dismay of the folks living nearby, who said: 'They suck on the bottle 'til they swell up like toads.' Hence, the name Toad Suck."

Interestingly, Climax's unique name isn't its only claim to fame. It's also home to the annual "Swine Time" festival.

I already read it and laughed about the name.. Toad Suck? really? :lol: There's a strange city in ohio name Killbuck..I think it's a cool name.

we got place in kent uk called 'prats bottom'listening olympic yesterday the walking race one of the medal walkers married another medal walker and they live in a town australia called walkerville

My favorites are What Cheer, Iowa, and Preemption, IL. Yeah, not Redemption, or Salvation: Preemption. So you were GOING to sin and go to hell, and then the town changed your mind?
 
Seriously, If you go to Cape Cod, you'll find several town name after funny name, like Shakeopee, Mashpee, Sandwich ect. Those who live in east coast would know it.

There are more towns in USA have funny names. Some tiny town in Kansas have funny name too. I ever wonder if someone sending letter to or provide address where they live, would it be embarrassing or what? or complicate their application process??

There is a Sandwich, IL!!!

Would be curious to visit Roachtown and Preemption. Looks like interesting names.

I'm sure people reading applications would love to get a good laugh out of all this :).
 
I've always thought that Hurt, VA was an interesting name. Driving along the highway and seeing signs like "Hurt Next 2 Exits."
