Okay y’all this word is something I came across today for the first time and so I looked it up and it made me a bit… nervous. For 3 weeks straight I had pain in both my ears. A strong ringing in the right, and a pop pop pop popping in the left. My ears have done some ringing occasionally through out my life and I have a trick to stop it, something I do with my jaw that puts pressure on my ear. It causes a ringing in the problem ear that is louder than the initial ring and stops it. I have done it as long as I can remember. Well the trick didn’t work this time. Both problems stopped but have come back for a day and then stop for a week and so on. I didn’t think much about it, I’m not a hypochondriac. I only go to the doctor for something serious. But reading “tinnitus” and the definition and what some have said here that being HOH tinnitus start and then their hearing “spiral” as one person put it, downward. I am hearing, never had any problem with my ears. No real ear infections, no tubes put in nothing. Do you think this may be something I should be worried about or it’s just my body being funky? When it started I didn’t say anything to my Deaf friends. I didn’t want them to think I was being fake or anything like some people do to fit in. Now I am asking because of the implications this seems to have in other threads. Thanks so much everyone!!

Most people have some tinnitus at some time in their life. It could be temporary - often an ear infection can cause tinnitus, especially if there's pain associated with it, but other things can too. Thing is, though, there's nothing that can really be done to fix tinnitus. So while it might not be a bad idea to mention it to your doctor, it's probably nothing to worry too much about.

(I am not a doctor, and this is not medical advice.)

Southern,

I don't think it would be a bad idea to see your ENT just to be on the safe side. If you're experiencing pain, it might signify the start of an ear infection.

As far as tinnitus is concerned, I happen to have bilateral tinnitus and know exactly what you are going through. Prior to my first CI surgery, I had mild tinnitus in my left ear. Following both of my CI surgeries, the tinnitus worsened to the point where it is now something I deal with 24/7 -- sometimes even when my processors are on. (Note: Not all CI users experience tinnitus.)

I'm also the kind of person who won't go to the doctor unless I'm *really* sick, but when it comes to my ears, I don't take any chances. I don't think you should either. Good luck! :)

Hey southern. I am hearing. I have difficulty with hearing conversations unless they are strong voices and I am nearby. Otherwise it is garbled but when I took a hearing test, I pass with flying colors. I had lots of ear infections as a kid and perforated my eardrum but I totally function normally in the hearing world so I don't classify myself as hoh in the least. With that said I hear a high pitch ringing in my ears quite frequently and has gotten more frequent as I age (40). I think it is caused by allergies that cause inflamation in the eustation tubes. Sometimes for a few minutes one of my ears lose slight hearing like it becomes mono instead of stereo but then it quits. So I don't see myself going deaf or hoh anytime soon although by 80 I would be I think. So yeah peace of mind check it out but don't get freaked out just yet. If you don't get dizzy that is a good thing I never have.

I got tinnitus two years ago and I'm starting to loose my hearing. I agree that you should see an ENT, but be prepared to either hear, "We can't find a cause," or, "We found it but there's nothing we can do." Hopefully, they won't tell you that. But be prepared just in case. If I hadn't been warned ahead of time about that, it would have been a big slap in the face.

For most people I've talked to, loosing your hearing due to tinnitus is a long process. So don't freak out too much. *hugs*

Regarding your tinnitus, I am also a bilateral sufferer. I am deaf in one ear, and HOH in the other. I would most definitely go to an ENT specialist next week. It can be a symptom of permanent loss. Have you been around loud noises? Sometimes I think the ringing is a carryover effect from noise-induced hearing loss. The hairs in your inner ear become smashed from the loud sounds, and they keep sending a message to the brain that they are being "activated" and you continue to hear those particular tones, even though they are not actually there. Also, some people have bouts of tinnitus from aspirin, or even high blood pressure. You will want to find out ASAP. That way, if there is something you are doing to trigger it, they can let you know. Do not delay if this continues into next week. Good luck to you.

Tinnitus Affects 50 Million

Hey Southern,

Welcome to the club. Over 50 million Americans, such as myself and my father, have Tinnutis. The only cure to to have electrolysis of the ear, but that solution is only for people who are already D/deaf, as one has no hearing after the procedure. The only other solution is to wear a hearing aid, however, there are new over–the–counter supplements on the market, such as Lipo-Flavanoid and Clear Tinnitus that decrease the ringing by improving circulation in the ears.

I always get that. Mostly my right ear, I get that everyday! It is driving me nut!! I know my right ear is getting worse. I went to hearing test and found out my right ear is 125% profound deaf. No wonder why my right ear is ringing all the time. No matter what, I try everything to make a noise sound to get rid of ringing. But still not working, I just have to deal with it. My left ear is starting too. Oh well, there is nothing I can do. Sometime, I slap my ear to get rid of ringing .lol

Well I know I have inner ear problems because I get severe motion sickness, and my dad has vertigo and will suddenly get dizzy and fall to the ground which is another inner ear problem. Also vertigo is not from heights like people think because of the movie. Anyway the ringing off and on throughout my life I wonder if it isn’t connected to the inner ear problem causing me motion sickness. I had a hearing test about a year ago, my company paid for it so everyone could have one for free, and my hearing is fine just this damned ringing from time to time. The popping on the left side is what really got me though!

Go to your local Walgreens and get Lipo-Flavanoid and Clear Tinnitus. They're suppliments to increase circulation in the ears, and they help decrease that ringing.

Another thing...

Another possibility is Meniere's disease. The falling down can be caused by that. Also, ringing that comes and goes. Please go see an ENT right away. If there is anything going on in there, it is best to catch it before permanent damge occurs. Meniere's strikes people in their 30's most times or later, but it could happen earlier. Do not be afraid to find out why this is happening!!! Putting your head in the sand will not make it go away!!! Once you know what is going on, you will be relieved.

Go see an ENT

Southern,

I agree with saywhatkid. Please go see an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat specalist). I looked up ENT on Wikipedia, and I found Otolaryngology. Under Otology/Neuro-Otology, I found Ménière's disease. What I found shocked me!
Ménière's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that can affect hearing and balance. It is characterized by episodes of dizziness and tinnitus and progressive hearing loss, usually in one ear. It is caused by an increase in volume and pressure of the endolymph of the inner ear. It is named after the French physician Prosper Ménière, who first reported that vertigo was caused by inner ear disorders in an article published in 1861.
Please go see an ENT, otolaryngologist or otorhinolaryngologist (ORL) ASAP!

Yeah it's not very fun. I'm facing that possibility for myself. :( I see the ENT next month to get the ball rolling.

Yes, I speak from first hand experience, as I have Meniere's. I was not diagnosed for a long time because I did not suffer from the dizziness, just had strange ringing and fullness feeling in my ear, that comes and goes...that's why I am...Say what? kid :giggle:

I can relate completely!!

I have had ringing in my ears for as long as I can remember. Lately it has gotten worse, I had my hearing tested, I am fine. There was a point when i couldnt hear the beeping because the ringing started up.

The other day I felt dizzy and had to sit down, it has been happening more and more frequently so I think it is time to go see an ENT.

Wow..I am reading your posts and now I am able to understand what my friend is experiencing. She has the same problem. I keep trying to tell her to join AD but so far she hasnt yet. I think she hates reading. :(

I shall try to be brief. When I began to become HOH, there were issues that are unspoken in most medical journals. I became paralized with depression! However your friend chooses to deal with this, she will need to learn to stop counting on hearing to meet the world. This is not easy. There are times I am almost wishing I was born deaf instead of heading there as I am now. I fit in neither world, and feel like the Deaf dislike the fact I can hear, and the hearing dislike the fact I cannot hear well. I put up walls for years to avoid any unnessary contact with people because it was frustrating and embarrassing. Your friend will need you and many others to make her feel as though the world has not turned away. I had lifetime friendships end because of this, because I was not the same person after I went through the depression and hearing loss. I tried, but I was rebuked. I feel for those people that someday their Karma is coming. Be there for your friend. She will find her place wherever it is, and hopefully we can make this forum part of that. There are many people here that have gone through the same thing! Good Luck to your friend!
