Thugs Left Man Deaf In One Ear (from This Is Lancashire)

THUGS left a man deaf in one ear after attacking him when he confronted them for messing about with a shopping trolley.

David Haslam, aged 56, from Farnworth, smashed his head on a pavement after falling to the ground when one of the two attackers punched him in the face.

The fall caused a six-centimetre fracture to his skull and the trauma of the fall has resulted in him losing his hearing in one ear.

The injury has also affected Mr Haslam's balance and he is finding it difficult to walk.

Detective Constable Randy Lyle, of Bolton CID, said: "This was a despicable attack on a well-known local man.

"He is friendly and popular and he did not deserve to be attacked in this manner for telling these offenders to stop larking about in the street."

Mr Haslam, known by the nickname Bubbles, remains in the Royal Bolton Hospital following the assault on Sunday February 24.

He had been walking with his 35-year-old friend Alex Cooper along Market Street, Farnworth, near to the Queens Pub, between 9.15pm and 9.50pm when they saw a man pushing his friend in a shopping trolley.

Mr Haslam told them off for messing about and one of them turned on him.

Mr Cooper then tried to defend Mr Haslam and was also punched, suffering minor injuries.

As well as the fractured skull, Mr Haslam suffered a broken cheekbone.

The attackers, who escaped up Frederick Street, are described as white and in their early 20s.

Police are now examining CCTV in a bid to catch them.

The man pushing the trolley was slim, around 5ft 8ins tall, with short, cropped dark hair and wearing a dark, zipped casual jacket.

The second man, sitting in it, was of medium build, 5ft 10ins tall with short and wavy mousey brown hair. He was wearing a dark jacket or jumper, with a beige pattern or print on the front and dark tracksuit bottoms.

Det Con Lyle added: "Yet again, another attack on an older member of the community by thugs. People must be sick of being unable to express a peaceful opinion without fear of violent reprisal."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 5751 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

People like that make me feel so mad! What has happened to the world, it's just the small minority, but it only needs them to spoil everything.
I hope Mr Haslam makes a good recovery - my best wishes to him and his friend, Mr Cooper.
