The Evolving Debate over Cochlear Implants

Talk of the Nation, October 12, 2006 · Cochlear implants have divided the deaf community for years. Many see the technology, which offers some degree of hearing, as a threat to deaf culture. Now that debate is shifting. Neal Conan and guests discuss the benefits and drawbacks of cochlear implants.

Guests:

Josh Aronson, filmmaker and director of two documentaries, Sound and Fury and Sound and Fury: Six Years Later

Peter Artinian, featured in the documentary Sound and Fury; deaf father of Heather Artinian

Heather Artinian, featured in the documentary Sound and Fury; received cochlear implant at age 9

Boult, just wanted to let you know I've started reading your posts and find it very interesting -- it's a long read so I decided to save it for tomorrow when I have more time. Thanks for posting this, though! Will certainly come back and finish reading this. :ty:

I made change and edited out the transcript and uploaded a text which is attached in my 2nd post. you can download and read it later.

although the transcript is on NPR but is part of a LONG LONG transcript since there were three "show" lumped into one transcript and I only extracted the portion that is relevant to the first post above.

Eh it's hard to read - it's all in capital letters.

Actually NOT All are in capital though... but mostly yeah.

It was "as is" as it was shown on NPR website... (copy and paste directly)

Although NPR mentioned that the transcript for today show was not final and "messy" so after 10pm EST they will have "Final" transcript up on their website. I'll check it later and provide or direct to it. meanwhile, others wants to read it now than wait later :)

I am not going to clean up the transcript for them hehehe..

Listning to the program. Really good.

Thanks Boult!

Regarding the text/transcript:
Open or copy the textfile in word and it will look reasonable...

I am listening now. As is my mother.

I love NPR.

:)

But, how can you capsule such a complex issue into a one hour radio program?

Just finished listening to it. i had been wondering about Heather and how she was doing with her speech, it was nice to hear she was doing well. Thanks for the link Boult.

Finally a "Cleaned up" trancript

Finally a "Cleaned up" transcript attached here! (extracted specific portion related to this thread than the whole thing of that day's show "Talk of the Nation")

You need Adobe Reader to view it. (I tried to attach a Doc, too big then rtf, not accepted format then decided on link dl them from my site but I realized PDF is cross platform and can be smaller than Doc so here you go! )
