...when you are trying to lip-read but keep making the wrong and funny guesses, and then it gets really irritating and the other guy isn't about to give up either.

Make it a game of how willing the person is going to put up with you. If they put up with your repeating and guessing, then that person is a real friend!!
I think that person really cares enough about you to try to understand you. It may also be that they feel their topic(s) is important and they want to convey the right message. Maybe they find you fantastic and want to understand message you're trying to convey.
Think of how many guessing and repeating you may have to do with people who have accent or speaks different languages. I'm sure you had to work hard to get your point across and understand their point.

The only people who put up with my lip-reading skills (which used to be good, but not these days) is my family. Anyone else, they're usually asking, "Why are you staring at me?" Now THAT is awkward.
