Even they are wrong!

Example:
1 km = 0.6214 mile
1 mile = 1.609 km

And the statement said:
one kilometer was greater than that of one mile...

1 km > 1.609 km (That's one mile)..

I would have the school doing something to that teacher! That is funny, but if my kid was right and the teacher wanted to disapline them for asking questions and getting put to the side, I would have someone's head on a plater
 
I would more have used it as an example about how the kids should question what they say, like say "1 kilometer is longer than a mile" and when someone interjects, say "Correct, I am wrong, and the moral of this is never take what someone says without thinking about it first."
