HOUSTON -- NEWSCHANNEL 5 crews were in Houston as some desperate refugees arrived in a stolen bus.

HOUSTON -- Thousands of refugees of Hurricane Katrina were transported to the Astrodome in Houston this week. In an extreme act of looting, one group actually stole a bus to escape ravaged areas in Louisiana.

About 100 people packed into the stolen bus. They were the first to enter the Houston Astrodome, but they weren't exactly welcomed.

The big yellow school bus wasn't expected or approved to pass through the stadium's gates. Randy Nathan, who was on the bus, said they were desperate to get out of town.

"If it werent for him right there," he said, "we'd still be in New Orleans underwater. He got the bus for us."

Eighteen-year-old Jabbor Gibson jumped aboard the bus as it sat abandoned on a street in New Orleans and took control.

"I just took the bus and drove all the way here...seven hours straight,' Gibson admitted. "I hadn't ever drove a bus."

The teen packed it full of complete strangers and drove to Houston. He beat thousands of evacuees slated to arrive there.

"I t's better than being in New Orleans," said fellow passenger Albert McClaud, "we want to be somewhere where we're safe."

During a long and impatient delay, children popped their heads out of bus windows and mothers clutched their babies.

One 8-day-old infant spent the first days of his life surrounded by chaos. He's one of the many who are homeless and hungry.

Authorities eventually allowed the renegade passengers inside the dome. But the 18-year-old who ensured their safety could find himself in a world of trouble for stealing the school bus.

"I dont care if I get blamed for it ," Gibson said, "as long as I saved my people."

Sixty legally chartered buses were expected to arrive in Houston throughout the night. Thousands of people will be calling the Astrodome "home," at least for now.

"I dont care if I get blamed for it ," Gibson said, "as long as I saved my people."
He is a hero. And I think they should award him a medal instead of arresting him. He did that to save his people, not for greed or whatever it is.

I repeat: He's a hero.

Future generations will judge these things - the young teenager who drove the bus illegally is and will always be regarded as a hero for years to come.

Boston Tea Party and American Revolution wouldn't have happened if people didn't dare to be "unlawful" as well.

It would seem that people have just gotten too complacent under the law since the Revolution, trusting blindly that justice HAS to be blind - what good are rules if they aren't challenged constantly? Gotta be on our toes :)

Humanity is one of the factors that should weight in with all this challenging, IMO.

Just babbling here...

Liza you hit it right beautifully! New Orleans is OUR Boston Tea Party for the 21st Century. The revolution was against King George of England and that was how our country got its start. Now another George, this time the esteemed Dumbya will spark a revolution to take the country back from an incompentent asshole like Dumbya.

George Walker Bush is now totally FUCKED! People are so really PISSED off at his response to the Katrina disaster. The Republican party will NEVER recover from this disaster.

This is the HERO who took the bus and collected many people then drove all the way to Houston. I nominate him for the Medal of Freedom!

yup i do agree with you, I WOULD do it if i were in that teenager's shoes. I dont give a (BLEEP) if they would arrest me but knowing that I surely did save people's lives by haul them out of flooded town.

He's a great hero! He did save alots of people and he will be remembered! He did it BEFORE the lousy govt responded, govt sure is slow at responding for that disaster!

I agree.....it was a nessesary evil.....it's not like he stole it in an every day context! I don't think even God would judge him wrongly!.

Good for him!!!

I am very proud of his initative in getting things done!

Maybe the mayor of New Orleans could take que from this 18-year-old and use some of these http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/050901/480/flpc21109012015 to help evacuate people now (shoulda used them for evacuation PRIOR to katrina, but people would rather blame someone else *coughs* sablescort *coughs*) I guess the mayor is too busy blasting Bush to actually get off his ass and do anything. *shrugs*
