WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Eighty percent of U.S. doctors and half of nurses surveyed said they had seen colleagues make mistakes, but only 10 percent ever spoke up, according to a study released on Wednesday.

These mistakes are undoubtedly contributing to the deaths of tens of thousands of people who die from medical errors in the United States each year, the researchers and experts on nursing said.

Nurses, doctors and other healthcare workers need to be less shy about speaking up about mistakes, incompetent colleagues and other problems that can hurt patients, the report said.

Healthcare workers who do speak up are not only able to nip the problem in the bud, but are also happier in their own work, said Joseph Grenny, president of consulting group VitalSmarts, which conducted the survey.

Grenny's team surveyed 1,700 nurses, doctors, hospital administrators and other experts for the study.

"Fifty percent of nurses said they have colleagues who appear incompetent," Grenny told a meeting of clinical care nurses.

"Eighty-four percent of physicians and 62 percent of nurses and other clinical care providers have seen co-workers taking shortcuts that could be dangerous to patients," he added.

The survey found that 88 percent of doctors and 48 percent of nurses and other workers felt they worked with colleagues who showed poor clinical judgment.

A 1999 study by the nonpartisan Institute of Medicine (news - web sites) found that up to 98,000 Americans die each year from medical errors in hospitals. Last July, Lakewood, Colorado-based HealthGrades Inc. said the true number was closer to 195,000 people a year.

The errors include giving patients the wrong drug or the wrong dose, surgical errors and spreading germs through unhygienic practices.

"People frequently see these problems but too often they fail to talk about them," Grenny said.

Why not? Because people fear confrontation, lack time or feel it is not their job, Grenny said. Even doctors were afraid to question nurses they saw making errors, he said.

His survey found the 10 percent of workers who did speak up felt good about it.

"When they effectively confront a situation, it makes a difference," he said. "These people are also more satisfied with their workplace."

Connie Barden, who helped author standards for the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, said nurses cannot be afraid to point out mistakes. "Nurses must be as proficient at handling personal communication as they are in clinical skills," she told the meeting.

Well, your lovely but incompetent president will sign a bill which will severely restricted people from suing doctors and hosptial admins for any kind of malpractices. Lawyers will not help you if bill gets passed (which it will be due to republican-control senate). You voted for Bush and you deserve this kind of shit.

Why I mentioned about Bush in this post? You better get busy and sue them before Bush will sign a bill to prevent you from suing... even I found your legacy of suing ridiculous but whatever, it is your decision to sue or not.

Go, go and go... get busy because time is running short. GO! and make your legacy noticeable in America or even, world!

On one hand, I'd like my doctor to feel like he can focus on diagnosing me and curing me than to be paranoid and do everything he can to avoid being sued by greedy people. They're human, after all, and I know they can't be right every single time.

On the other hand, doctors who are negligent deserve to be sued and punished. I can't tell how this bill covers those who make gross mistakes like diagnosing someone with diabetes when they really have a tumor, etc.

In the end, the medical industry needs to make doctors less like superhuman gods who hold your life in their hands and more like just regular knowledgeable human beings who may know how to fix you right back up. Medical miracles should be appreciated, not expected.

I want senate to veto this bill. I hope democrats fillabuster it too. The only bill id love to support is doctors salary cap included then id would support anti lawsuit bill. Like medical doctors cannot make more than $65,000 a year. Dentist and Eye doctors cannot make more than $45,000 a year Surgeons cannot make more than $75.000 a year. And nurses cant make more than $30,000 a year. That way insurance companies cant charge patients too much and just about everything is covered. And we wouldnt be in a crises.

bush has nothing to do with it and you know it magastu

it has been around for a long time and bush is fixing that too like poepl with back problems etc dr makes you sign this form if anything goes wrong you cant sue them, it has been around a loooooong time so dont bother that part.

No wonder several old people do not trust doctors !! They haven't seen doctors for years until he/she become real sick. Dr was surprised, they are in good healthy. Just virus or cold...

I refused to having CI stuck on my head !! :madfawk: cochlear implant !!! I do not trust doctor surgery ! I am cherish my skull

Bush wanted this passed because he thiought that there are too few doctors in America due to large medical liability. He wanted to reduce the liability so doctors can stay in business. I heard from the news that doctors have to pay more than $100,000 a year for medical insurance. That is a lot to pay. Bush said that small towns are losing specialists because they had been sued and lost. Fortunately this hasn't happened to me since I live in the city and there are enough specialists here. I dont know anyone who suffered as a result of medicial error. If there are no doctors then we will suffer alot because there is noone to go to in cause of emergency.

It's a republican bill. Are you SURE you don't want it to pass? If you don't want it to pass, does that mean that you actually realize that democrats are NOT the root of all evil?

Nope. That's uncapitalistic. Medical professionals set their wages based on market demand and supply. I have several doctors in my family -- their wages range widely from the health clinic doctor to the (almost) world famous plastic surgeon making mondo cash.

The doctors aren't the ones gouging you -- the insurance companies are. They're the ones who have healthy profit margins while doctors and hospitals pay off student loans, office space, medical equipment, and staff who support them.

Well remember when ronald reagan vetoed the 55 to 65 MPH speed limit to become national law? Well the democrats wanted extra $400 million for highways and bridges included thats why ronald reagan vetoed it because there was something extra in it. I want something extra included like a salary cap then i would agreed to the bill.

And this is why you will be in Jail. When those deputies come and slap the cuffs on you, you can't say that you had no idea. Making threats against the receptionist of your doctor. Can't wait to see your ass behind bars and its coming sooner than you think.
