i am so mad! I have had it up to my eyeballs with this teacher!..
My family law teacher is one of the biggest bitches on the planet..
the FIRST day of school we were in a comp lab and it was noisy cuz of the fans from the comps and such, neways i couldn't understand her and she kept putting her hands in front of her face to talk, so i got up when she was getting a book out and was about to ask her to speak louder and clear and ask if she could try to stop putting her hands up and down so much when she said to me
Excuse me I am in the middle of a lesson, do you mind?!
so i said to her, sorry i am hoh/deaf and i cannot understand you...she was like OH and then walked away.

THEN the 3rd or 4th class...we had an ORAL quiz, jeorpardy style..one side of the class vs the other...so naturally ppl are shouting out answers and i have NO idea wats going on...so i didn't participate...at the end of class i went up to the teacher and was like "are we going to be doing many of these types of quizes, because It's really hard to follow with everyone talking at once"...her response was
well why don't you sit in the front then, maybe then you would hear what's going on
Do hearing ppl not get that it doest NOT matter where sound is coming from, if EVERYONE is yelling out stuff sitting in the front isn't going to do squat! So after she said this i thought she was finished talking..so i walked away...little to my knowlege, she was still talking...my friend in the class said her face turned red and she looked all pissed off at the fact that i walked away while she was still talking, and she was like "how rude" and my friend was lke "shes hard of hearing she wears hearing aids, she wouldn't walk away on purpose"...i would never do that! well esp not to a teacher, im not that rude!

ANDDD the kickerrr...we had an assignment to do and we got them back and YAY i got an 81% and its worth 10 percent of my mark..so i thought i did pretty darn well for it being the first assignment and all...we had or pre midterm meeting with her and she was like u could have done better and i made a mistake on something cuz i had never heard her say it n class (it was a mistake onher part with a fake cheque that she had made for us to hand in) so really it was her fault why i got it wrong, cuz she shud have fixed HER mitake inthe first place. So when i noticed the mistake i never questioned it cuz i figured since she had given it to us, heyyyy it must be right, right?....WRONG..but of course..that was my fault for not emailing her and asking her if it was wrong, according to her.

We had this lil meeting on wednesday..now friday i walk into another class and go to check my school email and get this!
Each term teachers are asked to complete an “early alert” form identifying students that may be at risk of not being successful in a given term.

Your professor Sheena Laird has expressed concern about your progress in the Family Law course.

Getting help around the college is easy! Please contact me and I would be pleased to discuss various strategies to help ensure your future success at Algonquin College.

i couldnt believe it! I got an 81% on my first assignment so right now my mark is at about an 86 or better cuz that's including my participation and some little work sheets...i have missed ONE class, and usually when i "socialize" it's to clarify wat shes talking about...

so me being the nice Patient (getting mad one) i sent an email back
Dear Nastia,

I really am confused as to why she would be sending you a "early alert" as to my success in her class this term when I have received my first assignment back already and received an 81% on it. I don't appreciate her "concern" as I think I am doing well. I have missed one class and maybe I do socialize sometimes when other people in the class, but I am far from being a "problem" or a "concern" in her class.

Alicia

she proceeded to send me back this...

Hi Alicia,

If you have couple of minutes in between classes, please stop by my office B337d and I would be able to provide to you more detailed information, based on the teacher’s report. The teacher confirmed that you did OK on your first assignment.

Many people here at Algonquin are committed to your success. This includes your teachers, the program coordinator, myself – as a Student Success Specialist.

Take care,

Nastia

last time i had checked an 81% was more than OK and it's like she wanted to emphasize the ok, that's what had ticked me off the most, because i work very hard at school and to get this because a teacher dislikes me is very frusterating.

I talked to the coordinator for my dept and she was like well i know from personal experience it's very hard to accomodate something u are not use to esp with someone who is deaf/hoh, well if it's so hard then why accept me into the program!?

any thoughts on what i should do? i am soooo frusterated and mad about this whole thing..

Wow, I have no advice but just wanted to say that I am sorry this is happening. Good luck, this teacher sounds like an idiot! "Sit at the front" (some hearing people are so stupid)

lilitalia89 - since you're at college... why aren't you requesting for special accommodation like sign language interpreter or C.A.R.T.? did you notify its disability office? did you give special instruction to professor beforehand?

I think you are doing well with your studies. Can you school help you by providing an interpreter? Can you file a complaint against your teacher?

You can't really file a complaint against professor but you can bring up this issue to Dean - usually Dean of Student Affair or Dean of that department (professor's supervisor). I want to know before we make judgment of this situation if lilitalia89 has made proper preparations prior to starting of class such as emailing specific instructions (do not cover mouth, etc.) to professor and setting up accommodations with the Disability Office.

It is really imperative that you meet with the coordinator to assess what you may need in class to communicate better, such as ASL interpreters, notetakers, extra review time with instructor one on one, open study groups, and additional test taking time if it is oral (this was performed in another room with instructor at another appointed time), which I used when I was in college.

Most teachers are very accommodating. In my college, I knew that the disability office person would talk to each professors before the start of class. It is our responsibility to requests accommodations available and to inform professors about your hearing impairement before class.

I think that you should look into other college if your college presents problems like this.

OK, let me say this please b/c I understand what you are going thru.

BY LAW YOU HAVE RIGHTS TO THE TEACHERS NOTES. YOU DO NOT NEED AN INTERPRETER UNLESS YOU ARE FULL BLOWN DEAF. IF YOU CAN HEAR WHEN SOMEONE IS LOOKING AT YOU (LIKE I AM) THEN YOU DO NOT NEED TO ADVERTISE YOUR 'DISABILITY' PER ADA. PER ADA, YOU HAVE RIGHTS TO THE TEACHERS NOTES, NOT ANOTHER STUDENTs NOTES. TEACHERS NOTES HIT THE SUBJECT RIGHT ON, STUDENT NOTES MAY NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE SUBJECT TO THE 'BRAIN FILTER' OF THAT STUDENT.

What I would do
I would find the link to the ADA and send that via email to the person who emailed you. Contact Dean? Nah, if he needs to be involved, the teacher will get him involved. Complaint agst the teacher, nah you have the ADA on your side - - that speaks VOLUMES!!! The reason they are asking you to meet with them is due to liability purposes. If they put in writing that they can not accomadate you w/ teacher notes, then you sue per ADA.

I know about this. I have a Masters. More than 1/2 my teachers were Indian from India. They were oh so understanding. I got great ass grades because my teachers made sure I 'got it'. they took time w/ me after class. Like I said in a diff post, I met w/ my teachers one day a week to review.

Fight, girl, fight - - you will win, I promise. Don't let them jerk you around.

Sorry for the caps but this kinda stuff really really PISSES me off!!!

I already gave her my Individual Student Plan that says i am hard of hearing/deaf that i have a significant amount of difficulty in class hearing and understandign what's going on, as well as all the measures that shud be taken in class: i.e. do not cover mouth, make sure lighting is adequate when talking, make sure there is cc when watching a movie or powerpoint presentation, as well as use my FM system, don't talk while moving around so much, preferential seating, as well as that i have extended times for my test 30 extra mins for every hour. I also do have a blurb in there about student notetakers, which i hate...

what is cart?
And i cannot have an terp because i am still learning asl, as well as i wouldn't want to waste a terps time when there are people who really cannot hear at all who need a terp more than i would.
Last year i had a comp notetaker that wrote down everything the teacher said because she was like straight off the boat indian and she wouldn't wear my fm system so i just sat there, i decided to switch programs after and i didnt need the class, so needless to say i didn't try hard in it and ended up failing as well...but this class is really important.

I am meeting with my disability counsellor today to discuss the emails that were sent back and forth b/w the "success specialist" and I and request a loaner fm system until i find mine..someone may have stolen it..so i don't know if the school will pay for a new one for me. (they paid for my fm system, phonak smartlink sx, and i get to keep it...only that is is missing and i think one of my "friends" from last semester may have taken it)

C.A.R.T. - it's nearly like closed-captioning live. I think it stands for Communication Access Realtime Translation. Check out this link There is a stenographer (a lady with special keyboard that you see at most of court rooms) who will type out everything that professors are saying and you will see the text on the laptop. That way - I was able to fully-participate in class discussions. It's a great help.

Because I have experienced language development at a much earlier age than most Deaf, I have a greater appreciation toward the value of words (choices thereof).

C.A.R.T. allows me to receive more information than the sign language employed by those within the education system. My choice would be obvious.

The majority of deaf children are born into circumstances where language development is delayed. The subject would be better taught by a fluent interpreter (rare) but usually taught, as a better option against C.A.R.T., via sign language.
