Student, 15, Suspended For Passing Gas

Boy's Father Says Punishment Too Steep

POSTED: Thursday, March 19, 2009

LAKELAND, Fla. -- A Polk County teenage student has been suspended from school because he intentionally passed gas, according to school officials.

The Lakeland Ledger reported that 15-year-old Jonathon Locked Jr. was suspended from Bill Duncan Opportunity School under a school district rule against disruptive behavior.

School officials said the teen repeatedly passed gas to make other children laugh. They said the smell also made it difficult to breathe.

Locked's father said his son isn't perfect and they're appealing the suspension, saying the district went too far with its punishment.

Yeah, he should have "locked" it up while he was ahead.

Was too much gas toxic for the environment?

I guess he was trying out for the sequel to Thunderpants. ;)

:hmm: Now only if they figure out how tampons can be used to "shut" him up! LOL

:Ohno:

So...suspended just for farting? Wow, I guess they havent had anything better to do than that stupid rule for passing gas.

He should've at least get detention first as a warning for doing that...suspending him for farting is too soon of an punishment.

Why, even I farted afew times in school and they all look at me weird then get back to business. *shrugs*

Hate to burst your bubble. He was not suspended from school. He was suspended from riding the bus to and from school.

* To-Do Over Toot

LAKELAND - It's a practiced art among most middle school boys: The passing of gas and blaming it on someone sitting next to you.

Farting has been going on for years, maybe decades, heck, maybe even since the dawn of mankind. It's always, well, usually funny. But beware of laughing out loud at farts. It could land you and your sense of humor in the toilet.

Just ask Jonathan Locke Jr., a Polk County eighth grader who got blamed for farting on a school bus earlier this week and ended up being banned from the bus for three days. Actually, it wasn't the farting that resulted in his ouster, it was the disruption that followed, school officials said.

"I guess it was just because I was laughing so hard," Jonathan said Thursday. "I don't know."

The 15-year-old attends the Bill Duncan Excel Center, an alternative school in Lakeland. He denied making the sound on the bus Monday. He said a friend was making flatulent sounds with his mouth.

That cracked him up, he said. Then came the rank odor, which made the situation hysterical, he said.

"I just thought it was funny," he said.

A day later, when he walked onto the bus to go home, he was handed a note telling him he had been barred from the bus for three days.

"Jonathan passes gas on the bus to make the other children laugh and it is so stink (sic) that you can't breathe after he does it," the bus driver wrote in a disciplinary note that contains the three-day suspension sanction.

Jonathan said he walked across the street to where a relative works and his father came and picked him up.

He has had to get rides from his father over the next couple of days. On Thursday, he stayed home from school.

Jonathan Locke Sr. thinks the school went a bit too far in this flatulence fracas and said the whole ordeal has disrupted his son's education.

"I don't know how they can do it, but apparently they can," he said. "They say it's disrupting the bus and they can do whatever they want to if it comes to disrupting the children on the bus."

Locke Sr. admitted that sometimes farts are funny but said the end result here was not funny.

"He's already had enough problems," the elder Locke said. "I'm sure this isn't going to help him overcome the problems he already has."

He said his son told him he was not the passer of the gas on the bus that Monday afternoon.

"I know you can't search somebody for something like that," he said. The teen told his father: 'I didn't even do it … It was really the kid in front of me.' "

Polk County school district officials either declined to talk about the matter or didn't return messages today.

Jonathan Locke Jr. has been suspended from riding the bus for three days after passed gas started a ruckus.

I guess they haven't heard of windows...just pull down the windows and then the bus won't stink...simple as that...geez. *rolls eyes*

This is really dumb.

Hate to burst your bubble. He was not suspended from school. He was suspended from riding the bus to and from school.

I see. That just shows how the media gets different stories. One says he's suspended from school and the other says he's suspended for riding on the bus.

Twisted, Huh?

By the way, Thanks for clearing this up as well.

I agree that the school district went too far, they should at least gave that teen a warning, but instead they went and gave him the three-day suspension. I'm sorry but I don't agree with that.

Hey Jolie77

Its pretty ridiculous to suspended the kid for fartin', it's natural, people can't helps themselves, laughs, I got farted on all the time when I was in public store, I did got pissed off because the other lady thinks I did it, laughs, it's hilarious funny, but I didn't like it when a guy or a lady farted in front of me, and people behind me thinks I did it, what they did to me ain't nice, laughs, when anyone farted on me, I puts my hand in front of my face into a fan and makin' faces so the people behind don't thinks I did it, laughs!:laugh2:

Whats next? Suspension for rolling your eyes? How about breathing out your mouth because your nose is stuffy? This is crazy! It is so sad to see our tax dollars at work. This is the reason I home school my oldest son. Even though this happened on the school bus..you know the classroom situation is the same. To much time wasted on petty things when the children should be learning.
So what do you think this student will take home from this? Get real people!!! These are the future leaders of our country!!!!

Ha, I passed gas at my old job and it stunk up the whole place. I didn't expect it to be THAT bad. My boss had to open the doors, lol. I was so bad!
