so cuddley all of a sudden

my cat is always cuddling with me now. He usually is a pretty cuddley cat ,but not this clingy. Today he was scratching at my legs to pick him up ,and he layed his head under my chin. He usually goes off on his own and does his own thing ,but recently hes been really clingy.. does anyone know why hes acting this way? Hes an older cat.
