Salt Lake City, Utah

* Temple Square (of course!)
* ZCMI and Crossroads shopping malls
* In winter, Gallivan Plaza for ice skating
* Family History Library to check for genealogy
* Gateway Plaza, which is a nice outdoor shopping mall
* Ensign Peak, which is like 30 to 60 minutes hiking up mountain to see entire SLC and Bountiful areas, including SLC airport, The Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island
* Trolley Square (another shopping mall)
* Memory Grove Creek Park (great for bicycling and looking out for rattlesnakes)
* Red Butte Garden (at Univ of Utah, good all year long)
* Olympic Stadium, especially during the Utes home football games
* Abravham Centre (music hall, but they have this great glass art sculpture)
* Clark Planetarium
* Millcreek Canyon
* Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons, home of several skiing resorts and many awesome trails for hiking and bicycling
* 9th and 9th (my home!) and Sugarhouse District, which are like the Greenwich district of NYC for SLC
* The art museum at Univ. of Utah
* International Peace Garden

Outside SLC
* Park City: 20 minutes east of SLC, home to great shops, outlets and great atmosphere. Skilift takes you from town centre up to the mountain.
* Kamas District: A large area of beautiful mountains east of Park City. Home of the Lower Unitas Mountains. The Upper Unitas Mountains is home to Utah's highest peak, King's Peak
* Flaming Gorge (north of Kamas District)
* Bear Lake (1 1/2 hours north of SLC)
* Promontory Point (about 1 hr north of SLC, site where the trains from West and East were joined together)
* Bonneville Salt Flats, it is a desert made from dried salt where Salt Lake dried up over millions of years. It is said to be the flatest area on the world, and a lot of cars race there to set world records for speed
* Moab, Utah (2 hrs 45 min from SLC), home to many national and state parks, such as Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, Dead Horse State Park, etc...
* Canyon Reef National Park (1 hr 45 min from SLC)
* Zion National Park (about 4 to 5 hours from SLC)
* Four Corners Terroritial Park (owned by the Navajo Nations), site where the states Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona meets
* For hiker friends, several peaks in Wasatch and Unitas Mountains, such as Mt. Timpanogos, Mt. Baldy, etc...
* (7 hours from SLC) Las Vegas
* (4 hrs from SLC) Jackson Hole, WY; Great Tetons National Park and Yellowstone National Park

I noticed that several people posted Edgar Allan Poe places to visit. I guess a person could keep busy just going from one Poe place to the next.
