Settlement: NH hosp to set up services for deaf - WCAX.COM Local Vermont News, Weather and Sports-

A New Hampshire hospital has agreed to set up services for deaf and hearing impaired patients as part of a settlement with a patient who complained it violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The patient, Kenton Hermans, who uses sign language, said Southern New Hampshire Medical Center discriminated against him by failing to provide an interpreter when he sought treatment in 2008.

Hermans said staffers also attempted to persuade his companion, who was not a qualified sign language interpreter, to serve in that role. As a result, Hermans said he wasn't able to understand what was happening during his visit.

In announcing the settlement Thursday, U.S. Attorney John Kacavas said the hospital is paying Hermans $5,000.
