School for Deaf and Blind girls track team wins championship | SCNOW

The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind’s girls track team has been named the 2010 Mason-Dixon champions, while the boys team took second place. Both teams include members from the Lake City area.

They girls won with 165.82 points, and the boys placed second with 147 points.

The best times and distances in each event were submitted to the Mason-Dixon Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association. Team points were then awarded (10, eight, six, four, two, one) based upon the top eight performances in each event.

The girls team includes Jamanda Howe of Scranton.

Mariah Jackson of Beaufort had the best performance in the 100-meter dash (12.8 seconds), 200-meter dash (27.20 seconds) and also won as part of a four-member team in the 400-meter (52.16 seconds) relay.

Tameisha Hopkins of Columbia had the best time in the 400-meter hurdles (one minute, 23 seconds) and was part of the winning 400-meter relay team.

Paige Darus of Gray Court won first place in pole vault, (7-06) and Lois Griffin of Orangeburg won second (6-00).

Other track team members contributing points to the team championship were Bree Crayton of Spartanburg, Jasmine Elleby of Columbia, Destiny McCarter of Lancaster, Meka Minton of Rock Hill and Kia Smith of Dorchester.

For the boys team, Dedrick Simpson of Kingstree took first place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.50 seconds), 400-meter hurdles (just over one minute) and long jump (20-09). He took second in pole vault (10-06).

Deven Frazier of Cordova had the best height in pole vault (11-07). Marvin Black Jr. of Florence was first in high jump (6-02).

Other track team members contributing points to the second-place team finish were Jahan Green of Beaufort, Cleveland Hallman Jr. of Columbia, Dearon Harrington of Wallace and Matthew Wright of Gray Court.

The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind provides statewide leadership in education and accessibility for individuals who are deaf, blind or sensory multidisabled and their families. It also serves the professionals who help the students and families through K-12 educational programs on the school's main campus in Spartanburg, including the Schools for the Deaf, Blind and Multihandicapped; specialized vision and hearing services in school districts statewide; early intervention programs for infants and toddlers; family and program assistance for students with deaf-blindness; Braille and large print services; free phone and alerting devices; sign language interpreting services; summer camps for children who are deaf or blind; and family and professional conferences.

The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf, and the South Carolina Department of Education. The Department of Education named the school as a Red Carpet School for its outstanding customer service and as a Palmetto Gold School for academic accomplishments.
