Life Inc. - Cap'n Crunch sails into obscurity

The Soggies have finally won: Cap'n Crunch is quietly sailing into retirement.

Long derided by health experts for its high sugar content – a single serving contains 12 grams – the cereal is no longer being actively marketed by Quaker, DailyFinance reports. It appears parent company Pepsico is forcing the good Cap'n to walk the plank.

Cap'n Crunch was once the No. 1 breakfast cereal, but pressure from the White House and health activists is having an effect on how PepsiCo and other food companies peddle their products to kids. Sales of the cereal were down 6.8 percent in 2010.

Last year, PepsiCo vowed to reduce added sugar per serving by 25 percent and saturated fat by 15 percent in its products over the next 10 years.

"PepsiCo is no longer marketing Cap'n Crunch cereal directly to children. In a sense, you could say that they have retired Cap'n Crunch, and that's a good thing," Jennifer Harris, of the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University, told DailyFinance. "Unfortunately, children continue to view hundreds of ads per year for high-sugar cereals from General Mills, Kellogg's and Post Foods."

The critics have a point: Children cereals contain 85 percent more sugar, 65 percent less fiber and 60 percent more sodium when compared with adult cereals, according to the Rudd Center research. The average preschooler has viewed more than 500 television ads for such cereals.

I made my own granola for my child , it had no sugar or salt only a little honey !

I never ate any Cap'n Crunch.

Great! Another obama attack on our military *smh*

12 grams is all the sugar it has???? That can't be right.

I ate Cap'n Crunch so often when I was little kid, along with Fruity Pebbles and Fruit Loops, varies over week to week until I became teen, also I wasn't overweight until very late teen after stopped ate 3 kind of cereal in early 2000's, probably 2000 or 2001. Reason about my overweight was caused ate too much sugary food and fast food when I was teen at deaf school.

Cap'n Crunch isn't blame for obesity if you eat so responsibility and just look at daily calorie and do activities like exercise, running, ride the bike, playground, walking outside, etc so you will be fine.

Cap'n Crunch is pure junk and there are a lot of other food on the market , removing Cap'n Crunch from the market is not going to solve the obesity epidemic in kids.

I don't care if it is junk, I loved Cap'n Crunch so far.

I didn't like Cap'n Crunch when I was little which strikes me as strange cuz I'll go overboard on anything that's peanut butterly.

I never liked Cap'n Crunch, but I hate to see him go as he was a well known character. I ate mostly Cheerios and Wheaties.

My parents only bought Rice Krispies and Cheerios. Others with sugar I only got in little boxes on vacations. But I still like the ones with no sugar best.

My boys eat Cap'n Crunch occassionally...Fruity Pebbles is a fav of theirs...also Raisin Bran...but never Kix! Won't touch it. So I give it to my Cocktiels and they eat it up...And they don't have a weight problem and best of all, last month, all 3 had no cavaties...

I buy a variety of Cereals...they pick and choose...I like Almond Crunch....But with all the varieites of Cereal on the market, Cap'n Crunch won't be missed too much. So RIP, Cap'n!

Ohhh I can still taste my days of Cap' Crunch! If it was around all my healthy food in my house, I'll have it as a little occasional reward. But meh, I never bothered to buy it in a long time, lol
