Question about freedom nucleus upgrade?

Hi! My partner just got his freedom nucleus upgrade in the mail today, and he's having a hard time figuring it out, it seems a lot more complicated than his old processor (esprit 3G). Will he be able to hear with it before getting it mapped, just to see how it is....or is mapping necessary before he can turn hear through it?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I don't really understand how cochlear implants work
