I spent yesterday afternoon at the county jail conferencing with a deaf Pre-Paid legal Service member who tells me hes unable to get any help from Pre-Paid legal Service. His arraignment is scheduled to take place this morning and he needs an attorney for it and Pre-Paid legal Service is already stiffing him.

I even called the numbers on the Pre-Paid legal Service card and his shield tag and saw the same difficulties my client experienced in trying to secure an attorney for his arraignment this morning.

This Pre-Paid legal Service is a scam! And thousands of deaf people are already members to Pre-Paid legal Service already and they are going to be getting screwed over when they ask for help from them just like did to my my client.

I really wish all those deaf Pre-Paid legal Service members the best of luck should they be arrested or detained. Because one thing for sure is they're going to be getting screwed over when they need help.

The best solution is to stop feeding this Pre-Paid legal Service scam and cancel your Pre-Paid legal Service memberships immediately!

That way you can avoid Pre-Paid Legal Hell!

umm i have pre paid legal service, and i didnt have to spend one night in jail so its not ALLL the areas of BS its ALL the matter of who u hired... and if they have the expertise and from my understanding.... LA/SD/Orange county reeks of hell because there is NO one really expert at providing proper legal service cuz ur gonna get the run around.

if u paid for this and they have a limitacy of the hours, well lets put it this way... all lawyers gets paid by the hour, so his hours may have gone over exceeding so hes plby not getting his fair share.. and this will make him think twice before going to jail :)

I'm hearing that they have more than one of those pre-paid legal services. Do you have any source of the actual service that did this? I'm sure that there are some who do well and some who don't do well. We shouldn't follow this concept...

Here's something that many people do often...

I am deaf.
Target won't hire me.
Therefore, all Targets won't hire me because I am deaf.

Because of that assumption, they boycott Target and go to Walmart. Yet, other people say that Walmart does the same thing as well and end up going to Target.
 
Sorry, but the dail-a-lawyers are right. They cannot and should not discuss anyone elses legal business with a third-party. So, forget PPLS for right now.

To help your client/friend/aquaintance, contact the Department of Justice. Tell them the jail has not provided a TTY or other equal access for a deaf person to make contact with their council. Unfortuneatly, it won't happen overnight. So, the next time you visit, make sure he documents EVERYTHING. The DOJ will want to know all. Soon, this deaf man will have access to his pre-paid legal services or even a court-appointed attorney for that matter.

I hope there will be an interpreter available for the arraignment. That could be his biggest obstacle, or the quickest session.

I was merely trying to get PPLS to send an attorney to the araignment this am, nothing else. Wasnt discussing client case at all. Luckily we continued it untill Monday. The court as already appointed the client an attorney this afternoon. Thats because PPLS couldnt do it and when the judge heard about PPLS he laughed and went on appointed him one. And he's likely to be getting out on Monday after the arraignment.

And getting the terp wasnt a problem at all we have plenty of terps available as we dont have a VRS call center set up here yet.

My client and a lot of other deafs trust PPLS with over $300 a year in membership dues for legal help that is probably not going to exist at all when they need it.

This thread should serve a warning to the thousands deaf members of the PPLS scam.

Http://www.prepaidlegal.com/ and thats the one that has been extensively marketed to the deaf communities in the recent years.

A representative with PrePaidLegal.com joined alldeaf.com some times ago, and paid Alex to advertise PrePaidLegal.com here. Seems like that person is no longer with the company now. Also the threads about the services were removed from the public view.
 
Very interesting. It seems I saced a lot of money by staying away from this.
 
This is interesting. So, from what I'm hearing here, if my family or even my spouse were to call for me, they would have to refuse their call because I am the only one who can activate their services. Never mind that I'm incarcerated and/or am unable to access the telephone for any reason.

Jail won't give me a chance to make a million phone calls so I've got one call and I have to make it count. Who do I call first? My family who has the resources to do what I want them to do, or my lawyer whose sole job is to take my dang money and run away with it?

I've always thought pre-paid legal services were a scam, anyway. Heck, insurance too, but that's another story. Why would you want to pay someone in advance for a service that may not exist when you need it?Lawyers will ALWAYS be available when disaster strikes. There's no need to have one with your money and no obligation to perform.

Well, Steve...

There is nothing wrong with relaying message from Richard on the behalf of the client. How do I communicate to PrePaidLegal for reporting the auto accident or abuse from police officers? I.E., I am unconscious in hospital for a long period. Steve, tell me how does the legal works?

Give me a freking break. I know that you can speak on phone. You always think of hearing world, not DEAF WORLD. Nice try....

Richard, you need to speak to your client and seek another attorney to file the lawsuit againist PrePaidLegal service for breach of contract.
 
The more I think about it now, the more I'm unsure of which group to side with.

1) There's Richard's ADVOCACY group -- the group that is fighting for the people he represents to get the rights they ask him to fight for.

2) There's the Pre-Paid Legal group -- the group that is paid and has specific obligations to their client to represent him in legal capacity.


Now, Richard here is trying to do the right thing. Maybe the way he went about it was not allowed in the eyes of the law. If his advocacy group was a BAD group, not a GOOD group as he is trying to be, then the PPL group is in the right.


Suppose Richard was actually trying to screw his client's case. Maybe they wanted to give PPL the wrong time, or wrong date, or perhaps they're helping the wife divorce the incarcerated guy. Since PPL can't get in direct contact with their client, they can't make any decisions without him.

Suppose they let my wife order them around, even though they're MY pre-paid legal service, not hers. My wife has them do things that aren't in my best interest, and I can later sue them for it. THAT'S what they're covering for.

The best thing for OC DEAF to do was either:

1) Force communication channels between the incarcerated and the PPL. Richard could have forced the jail to provide the client with a TTY or provided it himself for the duration of the telephone call.

2) The client should have had other people authorized to act on his best interests for the PPL account, i.e., OC DEAF or family or whatever. PPL would have to act upon their instructions

Sorry that this happened to end up being a catch-22. Oh, well! At least the PPL know how to CYA.

Deal with the county jail NOT the lawyers they did the right thing cuz if U dont understand legality what the HELL are u doing in this advocacy business???? and ur trying to get them to voilate the lawyer/client priveldges....( They can NOT discuss anything with the 3rd party without consent and since the inmate can't call out due to inaccessablity use ur noggin, get the tty situation under way) U can contact the jail and tell them thier in voilation of the reasonsable access code under the ADA and they ll have to provide the TTY for him to call his lawyer himself! now unless he signed a release of consent to communicate with you with his attorney regarding his incaraeration u can't do anything abt it except deal with it with the county jail

OC-DEAF has no community advocates. Look at their job listing. Why should our client try OC-DEAF?

that wasn't the topic of the discussion.... 2ndly this is abt attorney/client privelges the attorney can't talk abt the case with you, 2ndly, yr attidute and threats were mute cuz u shld have asked them to send a consent form to the inmate so he can sign it and release information abt his incareration with you. 3rd of all, they don't want to lose thier attorney licence and or thier bar licence as well.

and umm u should watch LA LAW they show pretty much alot of information abt rights in here... and ur in the southern part of LA and u try to be superior mr know it all ? Humm thanks i know who to aviod if i was in the county jail....

Deal with the county jail NOT the lawyers they did the right thing cuz if U dont understand legality what the HELL are u doing in this advocacy business???? and ur trying to get them to voilate the lawyer/client priveldges....( They can NOT discuss anything with the 3rd party without consent and since the inmate can't call out due to inaccessablity use ur noggin, get the tty situation under way) U can contact the jail and tell them thier in voilation of the reasonsable access code under the ADA and they ll have to provide the TTY for him to call his lawyer himself! now unless he signed a release of consent to communicate with you with his attorney regarding his incaraeration u can't do anything abt it except deal with it with the county jail

The attorney client privilage is never an issue as I just tried to get PPLS to simply send an attorney to represent the client. There was never a discussion of his case if you can pay attention to the conversation that happened. They failed to provide the client with one and that's the problem.

PPLS isnt for real as they say.

NO they just can't communicate with u for one and for 2 U should have dealt with the tty issue that was the primary reason for failure to communicate. get it ???? so again PAy attention RMFE

LOL LA Law is nothing but pure Hollywoodization of the legal system there. I've had his consent for a long time since we have won some cases together in the past.
