Plea to deaf and hard of hearing - Jersey News, Jersey Local News, Jersey Latest News, News In Jersey - channelonline.tv

A campaign is being planned in Jersey to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

UK specialists are due to visit the island to research what communication support is needed and then train local people to deliver the service.

The Jersey Deaf Partnership Board is holding a meeting at the General Hospital next Monday evening to take note of what deaf and hard of hearing people would like.

A Partnership spokesman said: 'We want to find out about your communication needs and hear your views on communication support in the island, for example loop systems, lip reading, sign language interpreting, note-taking, live speech to text translation, subtitles, screen phones and better deaf awareness from hearing people.

'Consultants from the UK are coming over to research islanders requirements for deaf and hard of hearing communication support and advise on how we can train local people to deliver this service to suit your needs.

'If you believe that more could be done to improve your access to everyday life, activities and events, or you would like to know more about how a professional communication support service could help you, come to our open meeting and make your voice heard'.

The meeting will take place on Monday 23 August 6pm - 8pm at the Special Functions Room
General Hospital (Parade entrance by the main lifts).

Wow! A group that will really listen to deaf people instead of telling them what they need. Awesome!
