This thread isn't really a debate about the rightness or wrongness of getting involved in Iraq. This is a different kind of Iraq thread--for sci-fi geeks. Yeah, you read that right.

Is it me, or is there a tremendous parallel between the events that have been unfolding in post-war Iraq and the events of the first few seasons of Deep Space Nine? Could Bajor have been an eerie preview of Iraq 10 years after the writing of the show?

Am I the only one who's noticed this?

So does that mean the US is the federation?

The role seems a bit similar, as far as their interaction with the military, government, and religious factions...now, the really interesting one would be to spot the parallel involving the Cardassians. I think there IS one, but I'll be interested to see opinions on that.

That makes us the Cardassians, eh? At least to the Iraqi people, heh.

Not so sure, actually--remember that the Federation was not uniformly well-liked for its post-Cardassian occupation...not even close. The mix of feelings towards the Federation (ranging all the way from full support in some quarters to strong loathing as you see in the Circle terrorists) seems about accurate for the perception of the U.S. in Iraq.

If you consider the influx of foreign terrorists who are helping the insurgency in Iraq, and remember the way the Cardassians helped to supply the Bajoran insurgents at the time when sectarian violence got bad enough that it nearly resulted in civil war, then a new parallel comes to light.

To boldy go...

The Cardassians?? Don't you mean the Federation? They helped Bajor gain independence.

It's interesting to see fellow Trekkies on AD. I'm starting to hear details about the next movie. Looks like it's the NextGen crew one last time instead of using the other series' characters.

Well, there was a part after Bajor was liberated, where the Cardassians funded the Bajoran insurgents (through third parties so they didn't realize what was going on).

Here are the episode synopses for your enjoyment:
