(New York City) Three same-sex couples were wed Thursday afternoon on the steps of New York City Hall.
Reverend Pat Bumgardner of the Metropolitan Community Church married two couples, and Rabbi Ellen Lippman married a lesbian couple.
Bumgardner and Lippman said they were performing the ceremonies to protest the arrest last week of two Unitarian ministers who performed wedding ceremonies for same-sex couples in New Paltz, New York (story).
"Either stop the harassment or arrest all of us," said Bumgardner after she married two couples -- one male and one female.
Rabbi Lippman married two women under a traditional Jewish wedding canopy with the words, "By the power vested in me by the state of New York to perform any wedding but this one, I now pronounce you married."
