Most people with no loss of hearing have a hard time hearing the siren. Most people drive with the windows up and a stereo on making it difficult to hear the siren. In addition to that, sirens are under the hood of the police car. That focuses the sound straight out in front of the car so sometimes people at interections can't hear the siren until it's too late.
 
These things are wild! We just got a couple in the county, and you definitely feel them coming
