Next gen Apple TV and new remote control will be coming this summer or fall. I have remote app in my iPhone for using Apple TV. Easy to use it than current remote control.

I will plan to buy new Apple TV (4th gen). I will sell my old Apple TV 2 by eBay in bidding about $100 or more because someone need it for jailbroken (KODI-XMBC), hopefully. Apple 3 or later can't be jailbroken.

I have other Android TV box in using KODI. I try to buy new one. It may includes lots of channels service without cable subscription. Will charge $30 to $40. but I will find out about it during Apple event on June.

iOS already have built-in airPlay so I can use it for netflix, google chrome, game, etc. I don't see what's point to download the remote app.

Yeah I have iphone and ipad. I have used the remote app many times before. Right now it doesn't work. I rebooted my Apple TV so the settings for remote app is gone. I have to use remote first to set up on remote app.
