Cental,

Let me share with you a little bit about myself. When I used to live in Haines, Alaska from 2003-2004 - I worked for Photo Store as inventory ( computer specialist ). I walked everyday from Feb. 2004 to Aug. 2004 ( only 6 months to work ). The weather was very chilly durin' in Feb. and March - and, even my nose can feel a little bit of ice. I can feel my ears a little bit numb, but I was wearin' a cap to keep my ears warm in despite of cold. No car at that time, because Haines has only 2,400 population. I managed it well throughout 6 months of "icy" and "fair warm" days. I even rode on my 10 speed bicycle to get there to work after snow melted...sometimes in April. I live alone at that time. No one supported me. I had to do it all by myself. All my family side don't live in Alaska. They live in the lower 48 states. I managed to pay the bills on time. When the PFD came, I use it to get what "I" need ( bed, microwave, and dinin' table ) .. all three of those things were important, because # 1) Bed: I need to sleep GOOD, because of work. # 2) Microwave : When I come home from work durin' lunch time, I need somethin' to cook quick before I return to work... that microwave will take care of that. # 3) Dinin' table : It helps to hold my plate and cup so I can eat - before that I use the box when I sit on the floor. Sometimes, my friend from upstairs gave me some stuff that I can use, because my friend was movin' out of that town to move in Anchorage, Alaska to be near my friend's mother. How nice of my friend ! :)
That's somethin' I learned alot from Alaska and how friendly Indian people were to me. They treated me like a "family", especially in Juneau, Alaska.
Next year in April, I will fly back to Juneau, Alaska for job. I will success there because, of my previous experience. It's important to keep skills/talents at all times and use them. FYI, Alaska is the most difficult to challenge than other states.
I am sure you will be alright in the long run, if you chose what's # 1 prority in your life - like for example: Job that you need to support for livin' ( food, pay the bills ). Try to cut down what's not important until you get on your feet to pay them later. How about try the bus or walk -- bicycle to your work to save your trouble with car ? Car sometimes can hurt the budget, because of other things you need to keep your life runnin'. Sometimes by havin' a room mate could help a little bit ( that's another option ).

I hope things will help if, you look at your situation which is important and which is not like I mentioned above. Hang in there, pal. Patience will pay off later.

I faced a similar dilemma when I first started a new job a few months back and I was already a college student when I landed the job and I thought I'd be able to manage my time between college and work...but I gradually realised work was eating through my college time of studying and my free time on thinking up assignments for the students (I work as a teacher assistant in the DHH classroom at the local high school).
Decided to withdraw from college and focus on working as I'm getting paid to work and I need the income to support myself and my man through the month, etc.

By the way...Ms P...please stop the bullshit you've been weaving in just about everywhere in here.

yeah being a relay opr is cool job.
i don't understand why you need a college degree
anyway.

I would love to have a job like that...
if some fools or teenagers play on the phone...
scamming someone.... then I would
just ignore that...

but focus on good stuff...
like family contacting family.

CODA and LMN. You two both just put a big smile on my face. In this job, its so easy to feel unappreciated, and a lot of the time I forget how many people I actually help. Its hard to remember what my actual role is at times. There have been times I've wanted to quit. Where I was too overwhelmed. Thanks for the inspirational words. I don't know why I'm so quick to look at the things I hate about this job, that I'm also quick to forget what I love about it. For now, its the only imteraction with the deaf community I have and if nothing else, it helps to give me a better understanding of deaf culture and asl grammar.

School is a top priority for me, no doubt. But it is not fundamental right now. I'm in no hurry, especially when I don't even know what I want to major in. Ever since my parents learned I'm studying ASL, they've attempted pushing me to try interpreting. Even before I started this school semester, I had planned on attending GPC starting next summer, which is why I'm not as concerned about school as some people think I should be.
 You're very welcome, Cental. You know, when you're under stressful conditions, you do forget all the good things you do, and it's all the negativity that we stress upon the most. So, for that moment, while LMM and myself distracted you, you did start to realize all the good you do with your job and the good person that you actually are!!!!
Better times are coming for you my dear one!!! :applause:

Let me shed a little light on your dim mind. Being a relay operator is not easy as you'd like it to be. Its learning to sit back, turn off your conscience, and keep your mouth shut. Its harassing ignorant hearies. Its saying phrases and words that are meant to degrade and dehumanize you. Ignore scams and pranks? Guess what! I can't! We have to process every call as if it were legit. Maybe you should do a little research before you open your ignorant mouth. Think! Then type. Don't need a degree!? The average length of employment for an RO is less than a year. This is not a permanent job for anyone, and the pay is not meant to be.

Mrs. P is a bitter, ignorant old woman she. She will never understand because her brain is the size of a peach pit and she doesn't know what its like to actually have to make a living.

well since relay is a frustrated job for you...

then I guess I won't use relay anymore.

I'll just write letters and emails.

Thank for the attitude.

I guess I go write to Relay service and
tell them that a relay operator
came on AllDeaf forum and complain
about his job
and whine about it to us deaf people
that he needs a college degree, need the money
but ain't making enough, and darn teens kept
scamming on the phone....

Making us feel so bad about using relay services.

Come on Miss P!!..

just grow up and show respect.. I agreed with LMM.. Miss P ZERO understand.. and ZERO respect... hehe

Cental!!! I wish i could post earlier.. Hang in there.. I know life is hard.. Same with me, everyday I go through with many different behaviours or attitudes that drive you nuts (my kids) ... same with people calling and drive you nuts because they have no respect or giving attitude in background or impatient.. I just want let you know.. I have alot respect for Relay Oprs.. I still using them on tdd.. since we dont have cable modem for VP..

I always telling Relay Oprs at the end.. "Thank you so much for taking this call and you do so well!! Have a great day!" thats truly bright their day!!..

(mischeif grin) maybe you were one of my relay opr.. that I was whining and bitching at my mom.. :-x

hehe Just kidding.. hang in there friend.. ;-)

Don't you dare Miss P, because you actually frustrated Cental from the beginning. He actually wasn't whining, don't forget he has been going through some major changes in his life the last month or so, and being a member of AllDeaf, we are here to support and lend a hand to those we feel truly need it, and Cental did. I know life hasn't been easy for you Miss P, so you should truly understand where Cental is coming from. We all have our problems, and we all have our ways of handling them.
Writing letters to the Relay Service isn't going to help matters any, in fact, it will make matters worse.
Cental has the right to vent out to us, just like you do, and how would you feel if we had gone to another source and told them how you complain about your life, and all the whining you do. Do you think that is fair? No! Not especially when you need people to listen to you and to give you advice and put you in the right direction. This is exactly what Cental needed today.
Put your anger aside, and think about others for once, be there when someone needs support, give advice to someone whom you think you can help. You will see how much better you're going to feel when you have just help someone that was having problems.
Soften your heart, Miss P, not harden it.

"Thank you so much for taking this call and you do so well!! Have a great day!" thats truly bright their day!!..
Mom

Do you Cental, YOU have any idea how many smiles you have put on people's faces? Parent's having to use you to call their children or grandchildre that are deaf, and because of YOU they can talk to them through your gracious deed as a relay operator. Deaf employees that need to call their hearing bosses when they are out sick, because of YOU, this message gets across they won't be showing up for work today, instead of being a guessing game to the supervisor.
Long time friends who haven't seen or talk to each other for years. Finally can get to talk to each other through the relay, and share wonderful and sad stories, catch up on what's going on in their lives and why? Because of people like YOU Cental who make this wonderful world of communication happen!!!! Your job is not dead end Cental, you give life back to the deaf/hearing by allowing them to communicate with each other.
You have no idea Cental how valuable you really are!!!! Maybe this message will make you realize that because of your skills and professionalism, you have allowed two people to bond together even for just a few minutes. You put smiles on peoples faces when they can contact each other through YOU, because this is the part of the job that should be rewarding, even though you may feel it's not.
You have the ways and means to bring a deaf and hearing person together no matter what the reason is, and allow them to communicate for whatever the reason they may need to communicate. That is not dead end Cental, that is magical, because without someone like you? This could never have happened!!!

CODAChild, well said there girl

Cental, remember when I told you before in PM, that I don't know how you can handle by attending school and working as a relay operator, that's alot of work and stress to deal with everyday....I know I can't do that even I know being a mother is alot of work and also working alot at a rib cook-offs, some people thinks motherhood is an easy job, but it's isn't unless they try it themselves then they will understand what its like to be a parent, so what I'm saying no matter what others say, they have to be in your shoes to know what you're going thru....Hang in there my friend ...

I don't understand you sometimes Miss Pinocchio....You know what? I've always felt so sorry for you, and tried to be more understanding when you make posts or create threads, but now seeing this post, I dunno anymore, sometimes you can be really cold!

 Angel, thank you so much!!! What I really want to say, is that you always know how to cheer up a friend that needs it, you always have the right words, you know when someone needs you, and when you have had the most frustrating of days, you still have compassion left to be there to give someone your angelic uplift. You are truly one of a kind. You have so much to give, it's no wonder people on AllDeaf love you so much!!!! I pray you always stay the way you are, because it would not be the same if you didn't.
Much love to you, and big hugs to a dear friend!!!
