The way I describe it is having a sever sunburn all over your body (including scalp and places where the sun don't shine), a fever, chills, and itchy poison ivy covering all the sunburn areas. Also, when my eyes swell, I can't see, and when my lips swell, I can't drink without dribbling because my mouth can't make a seal. When my nostrils swell, it's hard to breath. As long as my tongue or throat doesn't swell I don't go to the ER. I've been there a few times. I'm afraid I give my Hubby a good scare at times.
No. I've been trying some of the home remedies in addition to the prescribed pills but no improvement.Any progress, Reba?
Update:
I finally got an appointment at the VA clinic. July 23 I go to the lab to get blood drawn for testing. July 30 is my appointment with my primary care physician. I hope that she will then refer me to a specialist. We shall see.
Good ol' government health care.
During the past two days I've had one hour of sleep. I'll try to go to bed soon but I'm not really sleepy. Poor Hubby has been so tolerant of me and my emotional crying jags and forgetfulness. Sigh....
The problem with food allergies that's it's not just the processing and chemicals that could be the culprit. It could be the food itself, no matter how pure and organic it is.
I kind of doubt that it's a food in my situation because of the timing pattern of the hives. There were many years between the two longest prolonged attacks, with sporadic outbreaks. But I can't say for sure.
I also used to get really bad migraine headaches on a regular basis but they went away by themselves. I haven't had one in many years. Don't know why.
Only if they offer something different from VA.
if worse comes to worst.... have you considered a private medical care?

My next doctor's appointment isn't until July 30. Maybe I'll get some news then.
In the meantime, I stay home a lot, scratch a lot, and sleep little. The heat and sun make me feel worse, so I can't even do my beloved yard and garden work.
In the previous three days I had a total of three hours sleep. Last night I finally got almost seven hours sleep with only getting up twice during the night.

VA did send me once to Dr. Finn at the National Allergy, Asthma, and Urticaria Centers of Charleston, P.A.
National Allergy, Asthma, & Urticaria Centers of Charleston, P.A.
He prescribed Allegra, ordered lab tests, and gave me an appointment after the test results were ready. The VA canceled the second appointment and sent me back to the VA Dermatology Department. The department head told me, "You belong to us." They put me on the Prednisone, which worked for a while but also has lots of long-term bad side effects.
That is very vexing news indeed. It sounds like a full-blown emergency to me, and I fervently wish you can find relief soon. I am pulling for you.
What the VA doctor meant was they had full control of my medical care, and would decide where I would get my treatment. (The "blessings" of government-run medical services. )Do you agree with this? Whatever you decide is fine with me, Reba, but it is your life.

When I see my doctor next week, I'm going to try to get referred to the allergy center again. They seem to have a good national reputation, and take a broader view of the hives problem then the VA Dermatology clinic.
I would really like to be set up on a program where I could be weaned off the meds, "flushed out", and slowly introduce foods just to be sure that it's not something I'm ingesting. But I would want to do that under a doctor's supervision. It's not safe to stop meds cold turkey without supervision.
I hope to know something in a couple weeks.
I had a good morning. I made it thru Sunday school and church comfortably. Now I'm home and my chin, lips, and under my eyes are swelling. I guess I'll go eat lunch while my mouth still functions. After my lips swell, it's hard to drink fluids without drooling (lovely).
I would also get really exotic and not just think food allergy. I would also consider environmental things such as the laundry detergent you use and whatever other chemicals you use to clean the house with. In short, if you can get out from under the VA, and find a good Dr who is willing to think outside the box, I would definitely do that!
Hang in there, Reba. We're all pulling for you!
