Mine Explosion in Turkey

230 miners??? Dang. A few days ago two miners were killed in Virginia and it was natonal news. I feel for the families

What came through on the news fairly early (Channel 5, St. Louis, MO) about it being shift change immediately reminded me of one that I lost an uncle in — Centralia, Illinois March 25, 1947. I don't really remember it. I was just 4 1/2 years old and we were living in Twin Falls, ID at the time. There were a lot of relatives on both sides living in Centralia and we did move back by that fall.

Turkey has a terrible safety record in mining. I believe they are rated as one of the worst in Europe. They've had over 2500 deaths in a bit under 25 years, which is an enormous amount. Plus, they let teenagers, kids, work in the mines. Like 15 year olds, and one such kid is missing. Pretty nasty all around.
