Hello everyone! This may be a silly question, but my husband and I are re-decorating Isaac's room to make room for the new baby and we were considering painting a portion of his wall with magnetic paint. We were thinking it would be a cool place for those letter magnets that we could use to teach him words (the magnets clutter up our refrigerator). The question is, will this interfere with his CI? Will he get a distorted sound when near the wall? Is it safe? We are planning on asking the implant center too, but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this. Thanks!

Interesting question.

I wondering if the paint itself is "magnetic". It might just have metal flakes in it so that magnets are attracted to it, the same way a refrigerator does. The refrigerator itself is not "magnetic"--it's just metal. My exterior doors are the same way. The are metal, so magnets stick to them but the doors themselves are not "magnetic."

Maybe you can contact the manufacturer of the paint to find out what's in it, or to find out if there are any warnings or cautions for its use.

Maybe your son would want to "hang up" his CI on the wall each night! :P

I don't think it will interfere with the CI...I have a metal-type "whiteboard" (it's made so that you can use whiteboard markers on it the same as you would with a whiteboard and I can use magnets on it as if it were a fridge) next to my desk, my head is a foot away from the board and I don't have any problem.

Oh, I have to watch my head when I go by the frig...my head wants to attach itself to it.

I know that it was kind of a silly question, but I don't want to put anything in Isaac's environment that may be harmful to him. I guess it is silly b/c Isaac doesn't have a problem when he's near the frige. Thanks for pacifying me....

No, it wasn't a silly question. I was just joking around. Sorry, if that came across wrong but I couldn't resist. :D

Wouldn't it be better to just buy boards that are metal like dry-erase boards?

Heh heh that happened to me at Frankfurt airport when transferring between flights. My magnet became attracted to a pole on the transit bus.

If it helps ya feel any better about him being around magnetice objects, ( To respect the privacy of another person, I will not say any names) but a certain persons son, while not wearing his processor, has been known to stick a magnetic alphabet letter to his head and run around the house acting silly!
So if a refrigerator magnet will not hurt, I doubt magnetic paint will. There is no need to apoligize for asking questions. We all learn from each other. That is afterall, one of the main reasons we are all here right?

oh LOL! That was what Fragmenter told me once after spending the night at his friend's house (it was the first time I realized the friend was implanted but was a "failure" for some reason and stopped using his CI). Frag was about 11 or 12 at the time and he told me he'd played with refrig magnets by putting them on his friend's magnet and that just about freaked me out! Hey son, remember that?

 Yeah, I even stuck a refrigerator magnet onto my son's head. He thought it was funny so he had like 3 or 4 magnets stacked on top of eachother sitting on his head.

Well history repeats itself and even with the same perpetrator! So Marshall thinks that is funny?

no, the only purpose of the magnet is to hold the CI processor in place. It won't interfer from my experience. Sometime I use my metal bathroom cabinet to hold my processor in place.

I forgot something, You need to keep her processor away from static. It can mess up the mapping. Plastic and fleece can create alot of statics.

if you believe your child's health is at stake, waht the hell are you doing asking faceless strangers on the internet for tips?! ask his friggen doctor for god s sake!

Er...what are you here for? Entertainment?!? Last I checked, we do have those categories elsewhere in this forum. By the way your whatever "name" represents, it lends itself to namelessness (sounds like somebody who just rattled off some letters on the keyboard).

Generally, I agree with your sentiments when talking about real health issues. While I wouldn't dream of discussing certain issues on the internet, I do find this forum very useful getting information, chatting, and getting to know people in a general way. Some of these folks actually know each other. So, it isn't so faceless as you like to think.

Now on to the real point, we often tell people here that they really need to discuss whatever (when common sense tells you this is for a doctor or a professional) with their doctor or health specialist. In this particular case, we are talking about magnets and the effects of magnetism on a CI. Those of us that have CIs like myself can be a useful information source for others without having to deal with the hassles of either looking it on the internet or discussing with a health professional (assuming it is not something serious).

So, take two and chill...

Sr171, You are much nicer than I am. I was going to get rude with this idiot.

*Turning sideways with one arm and hand pointing the way* I'm not stopping you...

BTW - This malingerer seems to still be hanging around in various threads.
