I'm thinking about picking up a desktop replacement laptop PC this month. I've been looking at several desktop-replacements at the Best Buy, compusa and the circuit city this week and I found some that look good enough for about 900 to 1,300. I'd love to have a featherweight one, but I am aware the desktop replacements are pretty heavier than a normal laptop.

The brands I found with a normal (not mobile version) P4 for the price, are from Gateway, HP, Compaq and Sony. I aint gonna order Dell or Alienware because I'd rather pick one up at the store. However at the best buy, I fell in love with a Gateway P4 desktop-replacement since for 1,000 it comes with the 2.8G P4, 512 megs of RAM, 80G HDD, CD-RW and DVD burner combo, GeForce4 mobile 3d accelelrator, and WiFi internet access, but there are almost similiar ones from HP and Toshiba..... The Toshiba's are much cheaper and I've owned a Gateway desktop PC before (I killed it with a swift kick after it froze up on me) and I'm a bit leery of buying Gateway again.....

should I go for the HP, Toshiba, or get the Gateway and pray it doesnt break on me? (heh)

I would recommend Tobisha for the best choice,HP and gateway sucks!!!! Though, I'm a Mac fan, not a PC....if I were a PC user I would pick Tobisha if u chose one of those three. :)

I was also thinking more leaning on the Toshiba since it got more features, lets just call it "more bang for my buck", for a cheaper price...hmmm time to visit http://www.toshiba.com and play with the configurations and I'll find one in stock at the stores.....

My sister bought a new Toshiba laptop (17-inches?), and I think she loves it. Go for it. Good luck!

I am getting a laptop soon. I am confused by all the options though. Currently I am planning on getting the 12" powerbook by apple. I looked at dell and compared the features. Overall Apple seems to be the more complete package and the cost is about the same. I couldn't understand Toshibas webpage though? Does anyone has an informed understanding of what the best laptop out there is right now without spending more than 1500 bucks?
Thanks!

Actually, overall would be the best to buy an Apple laptop. Let's wait a little in a few weeks to see if it announces a new one - we may never know. It will anounce a new Mac OS 10.4 next month. My brother-in-law loves his old 17-inches Apple laptop and he is president of a printing company.

Dell is the best, Toshiba second, HP/Compaq third.

Be sure to get wireless and CD-RW/DVD!

Dell and Gateway were heavily competition a few years ago.

A president of Dell Company gave George Bush a lot of money during the election - it was a big time. That's why I do not buy Dell anymore.

Gateway owns a huge cow farm, and I think it saves cows.

UPDATE:

I FINALLY got my laptop today! It's a HP Pavilion zv5410us with the 1.8G AMD Athlon-64bit CPU, 512 megs of RAM, 15.4" widescreen TFT LCD, 60 gig HDD, dvd player/cd burner, 64 megs dedicated (separate from mobo) Nvidia GeForce4GTS-440 GO 3D accelerator, ports for 6 digital camera card types like SD, Memory Stick, and others I cant remember their names! It has the most important thing I had been looking for....WiFi!

I got it for a smokin' good deal at the price of 1,200 at the Circuit City. I tested the pooter's WiFi for the first time and I have to say...WiFi was really fuckin' blazin' FAST. AD was loaded in the blink of the eye at over 11mbps. I also added a laptop fan mat that is powered by the computer's USB1.0 port to keep the laptop from getting so hot.

Thanks to everyone for the input when I first asked about potential DTR laptops last week. It's the first laptop I ever bought and only the third computer I bought in over 7 years.

Smart choice!!!! Go for AMD Athlon64!!! Only AMD offers 64 bits platform, and that Intel has not yet indroduce 64 bit platform for general computing, and what I learn about next windows version beta is that it only works on 64 bits platform, hence AMD Athlon64 meets that while barely Intel offers (Only if you can afford Intel Xeon). The max bus speed Intel have is 800MHZ where AMD already over 2000MHZ!!! I think AMD is now ahead of Intel!

Im using AMD Athlon64! I love it!
