I want to know some of you, who are parents and who are not parents. Please mention it here if you are parents or not. The reason is that one member said that in general, kids watch on tv too much. How did you know? I want to know why you think its too much.

For me, as a parent, I know why some kids love to watch on tv for some reasons. I did not say that it is about my kids. No. I have seen some kids do love tv but have other things to do as well. My point is that any one who assume about kids watching on tv too much, then why are they complaining, then do something about it. :ugh3:

I had to copy and paste it here from other thread for example. Since it is already in public.
I wouldn't let my children watch TV all day. This reminds me of this funny, yet true picture I saw years ago.

Too many kids are left to themselves in front of a TV for long periods of time when they should be outside playing or using their mind in a better way. Too many people these days want to be entertained.

I was talking about kids in general! :)

You don't really know or interact with any kids do you?

Kids I know don't spend much time in front of a tv. It's the natural inclination of kids to be active and exercise.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying some video entertainment in addition to physical activity.

I said, "Too many kids are...."

This means I am talking about kids in general!

My point is not about using Netflix or any other video streaming networks, but rather the fact that kids are watching too much TV these days and filling their minds with things that shouldn't be there.

I would be careful if I were you to assume such a preposterous thing. People say there's nothing wrong with this or that, but in reality, they don't understand the effects on the mind by watching TV [all day]. Like I said, parent nowadays just let their kids be entertained by the TV instead of spending time with them, taking them out, doing physical activities, and so on. This is one reason why too many kids are obese, lonely, unloved, etc. It is true that with these days people are becoming people that just like to please themselves.

Mod note:

Thread moved to proper location.

Many people said too much for kids to watch on TV. I thought is right. I let my kids watch tv but not all day. They need to break time and rest their eyes. Give kids to play their favorite toys; and also play their physical as exercised. We're allowed my kids to use our computers as education and games. This is what we do for my childrens.

My daughter did not watch a lot of TV , I had going her to swimming lessons or we went to the park with some friends. We could go to the park just about everyday in California so the TV was very lonely most of the time. I think if a kid watched 4 hours of TV at a time that is too much. One hour is long enough . They go outside and play or if it's raining read a book .

In some neighborhoods, it's safer for the kids to be inside on the computer or video gaming.

Young kids in general will choose to be active, as others have said. I did read an article about a toddler who refused to do anything but use an iPad, and his parents cut him off cold turkey. Once they did he went back to normal toddler things and they limited his iPad use much more after that.

The kids that you have to worry about are the tweeners and the teenagers. That's when kids slow down naturally and you sometimes have to work to keep them active.

but Yoda, 2011 isn't exactly 'years ago' LOL, its just past only couple years ago just saying

I always make sure to keep my kids involved with any activities as much as they can. such as, Ski, track, softball, and gathering buddies. I do let my kids to use netflix so they can pick their convenient time to watch it in their free time.

I dont judge any parents, but hope they use the right judgement on handling kids.

I think having TV (netflix or etc) helps a lot when my kids get their time alone. My kids like having ipod or ipad while they play other things in their room at the same time. Interesting.

I do see any owner of resturants, and they provide their ipad to their kids when they have no baby sitt but having ipad for kids to watch or run back and forth with helping parents in the kitchen. I thought the owners are lucky to have ipad for kids.

I am not talking about people who are focusing/using on drugs and let their kids to watch in front of tv all day. Those kind of talks that i dont want to talk about because its their choice of lifestyle.

Ipods and Ipads are great for occupying kids in a restaurant. And I think they promote early literacy too.

I have granddaughters aged 4 and 7 who can text me on FB messenger when they want , and it helps correct their spelling . I think they are much more advanced than kids of earlier generations.

And they do activities and get lot of exercise too!

nah ban ipads, unfair advantages fro rich kid to poor kids in education...

Do you have children? If no, please zip it. I know Frisky Feline very well and have met her and her beautiful family. I enjoyed being with them years ago. Her kids are cute and know what to do with themselves.

Mine don't watch too much. During breaks they watch more, but I keep them involved in chores around house (so I can watch TV ;)). The younger two play together a lot drawing, playing school, and the older one reads a lot. My oldest, though is hooked on her phone and being social. She doesn't watch much TV either, and I'm making sure she gets exercise. She wanted to play soccer till I told her who the coach is (least favorite teacher). And the youngest is at day care all day, and they don't even have TV.

My kids sometimes for a period of time watch too much tv and other periods of times, are so busy with their activities, events, family outings, and etc that they wont watch tv for a long period of time. It depends on what we do.

yeah same here. like kids had winter break, and outside was too cold. they found some old movies and watched it for a long period of time.

Precisely! When kids are sitting in front of a TV all day, they are not getting any physical exercise. Sadly, schools these days don't let kids engage in P.E. as much as they should! Even some schools have cut P.E. for budget reasons and to give other electives a more priority.

Parents are not allowing their minds to be simulated by having the watch educational videos, play educational games, and so on. They are just letting kids be entertained by watching TV shows that will not really help them in life. Besides, with TV these days, kids are being exposed to things they should not see.

You are stating the obvious, however, don't take your focus off the true meaning of the photo!

Absolutely, iPads are definitely helpful. Other than promoting literacy, it also puts at advantage for people with autism or other kinds of neurological disorders to be able to communicate.

I am not a parent but am an uncle. Both my niece (17) and nephew (11) are very active outside of the home but they do have their 'tech/tv time'. Nephew does occupy himself with his iTouch (not sure what the heck he has now...) or with his mother's iPad Air sometimes when we are out to eat as he is the only kid at the table; niece is away at college. I know they've had periods of being 'slouchy' and staying home to watch tv or play on the wii/Xbox or text to friends a large part of the day but they also participate in school activities or go outside the home.

I've seen the same here in my neighborhood- the kids do play outside on a regular basis. On the other hand I do know of some kids who do sit in front of the tv (sometimes by their choice not necessarily their parents') more than most- the ones I know aren't obese.

I'm only telling what I know and have seen/experienced- I wouldn't dare make a blanket statement like RY does. Yes unfortunately SOME schools have to drop P.E. because they don't have the money to support it... whose fault is that? The school system and/or the government need to wise up and be able to provide what is needed.

As much as I don't like that some parents 'park' their kids in front of a tv or the kid sits in front of a computer (oh wait... as an adult I do this...well...) or play games, I am not going to sit here and lecture anyone on it because there are a variety of reasons why that may be- not safe to be outside (inner city), parents have to work 2-3 jobs just to support and can't afford sitters or day care, to name a few.

I think it's the culture we're creating, one that works hard and wants to find an easy way to get their kid to sit still. So they look for the easy way out: the television.

Otherwise the child might be running around town causing trouble, which causes worry for the parent.

Parents are having to get more jobs, giving them less energy to care for their children at home. Parents are wanting to dump their kids off at school for a break, making our education system naturally more unrefined.

And really, it does also depend on where you're from. If you live in a big city, it's usually best to keep your kids in-doors. It's not like rural areas where there are lots of places to play without having to worry about creeps and gangs. City streets are just dangerous places to leave kids, so keeping them in-doors requires something to keep them busy. Once again we go back to the TV, with its cartoons to act as a glorified supplemental toy.
